I fscking HATE/HATED high school

My high school had INCREDIBLY incompetent teachers, counselors, and administrators. We were told to take classes we shouldn't/didn't have to take, etc. etc.

I ended up getting screwed by it.. I was told I didn't have to take a class because my carry-over credit from middle school was valid. Come graduation practice and I'm told it doesn't count, and I'm missing two credits. This is over sh!t I SPECIFICALLY asked if it would work and was told it would.

Fast forward a year. (I took summer classes to make up for missing credits) My local college (kennesaw state) just denied my application because they accept transfer students and straight-out-of-high school students before anyone else.. (anyone else ==me)

SO, I'm going to have to go to some 2 year school for 30 hours (floyd university) before I can transfer in.

ALL fault of my high school counselors not being prepared/not caring enough to get straight answers.

Cliff notes:
counselor told me credits would count that didn't, so I couldn't graduate.
this followed me into college and now I can't go where I want to go.

Dammit, I missed that part.

ANYWAY...

Like I said, inconvenient but not the end of the world.

Make use of the extra time you have. Build up your savings, etc.

Algebra 2. I took it in middle school and the credits carried over. As a freshman they told us those credits would count towards our GPA but not towards credits for graduation. Then as a sophomore we were told they would count, then as juniors told AGAIN that they wouldn't. My senior year my counselor told me that they now count (Again). She was wrong and didn't want to check and make sure.

Ditto...
The counselors at my school had no idea about credts, prereqs, scholarships, or anything. I was misinformed and told conflicting stories each year. Luckily, I did my own research with the county school board before my senior year. If I hadn't done that, I would have been screwed out of a 100% Florida college scholarship.

I think this is pretty much par for the course.
My guidance counsellor was pretty "with it" but for some reason she was always trying to convince me to take SAT Verbal as an elective instead of photography or another music class.

This is stupid for 2 reasons:
1) I am a verbal whiz. I got a 600 on SAT Verbal in SEVENTH GRADE. I don't think I need any additional practice.
2) I was notorious for not doing homework. Electing a class that involves LOTS of extra homework would only kill my GPA.

All I could say was "Why do you keep pushing this? Do you get some kind of kickback from the English department?!"

the counselors at my last high school were terrible at everything. You could never see them because they were always out to lunch or had something better to do. I wanted to graduate early and I had to meet with my counselor and principal in order to get approval, they were like well we'll let you know. They didn't let me know until it was too late and summer school had started. Now I'm at a different high school in my junior/senior year. They're letting me graduate early and I don't even have to go to summer school to do it! I think counselors vary rom school to school, but I also think that this one is an exception.

My brother used to say "Wanna be a highschool counselor? Just memorize all the chapters in the student rules book dealing with credits and classes". He was right on too!

I would completely agree, I never went to HS for that very reason.

However, since it can no longer be avoided he might as well make the most of the situation. An extra term will not kill him, & having some extra cash on hand is never a bad thing.

Bitching about the school accomplishes nothing, while plenty of good can come from the situation if he takes advantage of it.

The only thread crap here is yours.

I did this also. The thing is that it counted towards my graduation and I have no idea why it wouldn't for you. That just sucks man.

Not quite. You can get by with a cursory knowledge of the policy and a lot of fudging.

yeah i hate high school counselors. When i was a freshmen i was hit by a car while riding my bike it was pretty bad and ended up missing a LOT of school.

So the counselor told me to go to the alternative school for the remainder of the year. Since i had missed a lot of school they wouldn't accept me back (even though i was not that far behind schoolwork. i was in bed for a month and able to catch up with them). Wel l come to find out you could NOT transfer all the credits back to the regular school. I ended up having to take a extra year of high school credits.

In the middle of my sophomore year we found out i would have been able to continue in the regular school since it was a medical problem. But the counselor didn't know that. Not to mention he should have KNOWN that the credits from the alternative high school wouldn't transfer (since its for mentally handicapped, pregnant girls and troublemakers) Oh and it branded me as SPECIAL NEEDS that was a pain to get out of.

while it worked out in the end (the 5th year of high school i also took credits at the local CC) i wasted a fricken year i could have spent freezing my ass off at RIT!

Maybe times have changed a bit, but #1) My middle school barely offered pre-Algebra, let alone Algebra 2.... #2) When I finally took Algebra 2 in high school, I could barely wrap my brain around it.

Man thanks for the support.

Bitching about it makes me feel better... sorry for wasting your time.

I'm trying to make the most out of the situation, but it's nice to hear that my HS wasn't the ONLY one with less than proficient counselors.

WTF good can come of this situation????

I remember my counslor, he was always like you have to take this and this and then he would tell me the options I had for other classes. I finished the requriements just fine, considering I had 4 classes my senior year.

Look at it this way:

The only BAD thing that can come of this already has:

- A slight delay in starting college
- Cost (both time and money) of retaking the class

What good can come of it?

That's up to you.

I'd personally work as much as possible. Right now I'm working two full time jobs.

A semester's worth of my current work schedule & I could save $7500. More if I didn't have to pay rent or otherwise support myself (as is likely the case for you, if you're just out of HS).

I'd trade $7500 for a semester

As for sympathy vs advice, I don't do sympathy (ask my g/f, she yells at me all the time about it :().

I'm not asking sympathy.

As stated, I didn't just graduate. I should have graduated a year ago, but had to take summer classes.

As far as not having rent/bills; I've been on my own since I turned 18. I've lived on my own a year and a half now. This means no help from my parents (who aren't really around anyway)

For the guy who asked what HS: Sprayberry High in marietta.
