I have these two folders in my C: folder, and they've been bothering me for a while...these are the name of the two folders:

1e4878670210edb39dc19452c4a3cb
24761034a69ae610454df2a901

they both have three subfolders called: common, sp1, and sp2

then under both sp1 and sp2 there's a folder called update...

can i delete these?

do you have any Service Packs installed regarding your OS?

If so, they might contain recovery, removal or installation files.

Removing the folders MIGHT create problems later on.

yeah, i have service pack 1 installed for win xp, and i think i have service packs installed for my office.....and for my other computer, i have service pack 4 isntalled for win 2k pro......if i can't delete em, can i rename them? or maybe move them?

If you rename them, and the OS needs those files later on, it wont be able to find them and will display errors and ur system might become unstable. Just leave them as they are or hide them if they are bothering you. You can always unhide them later on.

I delete those all the time - they are WinXP SP1 updates and Microsoft must own stock in Maxtor,WD or Seagate. DOnt know why it keeps the files on your had drive - no need for them.

rename them and wait about two weeks or so, if you get an error message, change the name back. If after a few weeks you find that you have never needed them, just delete them. I have deleted files like that numerous times. Many times they were empty but occasionally had something in them.

If you don't use it in two weeks, chances are you won't need them.

These files have the information necessary for XP to roll back whatever it installed in the line of OS and driver updates. This is good, because from time to time a driver or update will cause more trouble on certain systems than it fixes. HOWEVER, you are right in that in time they might take 50-100MB of your hard drive space.

Now, think about that for a minute . . . in the total scheme of things, if you have a system sufficient for XP, then that is an insignificant amount. It is considerably less than the default page file for XP . . . or the default Recycle Bin . . . or the default System Restore files.
