I found one of those danger-of-death electrical substation things, at the bottom of a building, wide open

Fortunately, I recalled the story of a famous cat, and also a rather dramatic PSA video about electricity.

It was basically a transformer vault at the bottom of an office building. However, there was no padlock on the door, and the door was wide open. The street was deserted apart from a few kids. No vehicles or anything.

Anyway, I did peer in but couldn't really see much because it was dark. And I sure wasn't going to go fumbling about for a light switch. However, you could just make out a big transformer, and some big 11,000 volt switches, and something at the back of the vault which looked like some meters with some massive cables coming out of the bottom.

After shouting a bit and jumping up and down to make sure there was no one in there, I called the emergency number for the PoCo.

I went back a couple of hours later to see what was going on, and there were about 3 PoCo trucks and several linesmen chatting into radios, with one guy doing something in the transformer vault - but I couldn't see what.

I'm just wondering what might have happened? Is it normal practice to send a whole line crew down to put a lock back on the door? Or could the crew have been doing some work and forgot to lock up when they went for a cigarette break.

Well, I did ask one guy. He just laughed and said something about working shifts.

Someone started a job, wasn't able to finish it on thier shift, and the next shift didn't come as quickly as they thought they were going to come.

Whew! That could have turned into a bad situation fast. Good job calling them. I bet somebody got chewed out for that one.

For safety reasons, you'll seldom see a single person working in an enclosed or underground vault. Too many things can go wrong. Three trucks seems a bit much, but they may have decided to dispatch more people because of the unusual situation (at least I hope it's unusual...).
