The purchaser charged it on his Visa so he may be fine but could he be SOL if the camera breaks? Should I try to find the owner?

I think the name was very common ie Robert Smith.

If the camera breaks, the purchaser should still be able to pull warranty on it, so that shouldnt be an issue, but kudos to you if you go the extra mile and try to track them down.

Unless you live in a small town, good luck. I admire the idea, but personally I live in a county with a population of one million. Needle in a haystack FTL.

they will have proof of purchase from both their credit card statement as well as best buy keeps a database or receipts. I've been able to get proof of purchase from best buy just by showing my DL.

just pitch it.

I hope it was a nice camera that isn't prone to break. Nice thought in looking for the person, I'll be honest that thought probably wouldn't have crossed my mind.
