It's a company check with a personal name on the check, so not sure if their account is open... is this check from 1999 that I just found in my closest cashable?

i think most checks die after 6 months or something.. worth a shot though.. most banks probably wouldnt even notice.

I don't watch Seinfeld so I don't know if you're serious or not, but: the check becomes voidable by the issuing bank after a period of 90 days. They can choose to either honor it or void it to their discretion.

Generally their is an expiry period "at the bank's discretion".

The bank may honour it, they also may not even notice ;) The worst that will happen is they'll tell you the cheque isn't valid anymore.

Well, the absolute worst that could happen is that the check would bounce due to lack of funds or a closed account. The "rubber check" fee usually isn't more than $20, though.

Doesn't the writer of the cheque have to pay the NSF fee, not the guy that tries to cash it?

Believe it or not, but the casher can be assessed the NSF fee in certain cases....in addition to the writer.

Deposit it at an ATM, a teller inside the bank might reject it.

I would call the issuing bank and ask them if the check is still valid.

Can you contact the issuer? It would be polite to let them know just in case they no longer have it on record and it caused a bounce.

I thought most checks expire after 180 days. At least that's what mine says
and I guess it wouldn't hurt to try

how much was it, if you don't mind me asking?

Hey I once cashed a check at my bank that was expired. I guess the teller didn't notice. I think I also cashed a check once without signing it.
