The guy who cuts my hair is the shop owner...and only barber in the place.
No tip. He won't take one. Just the $10 please.

Am I one of the few who get's their hair cut once every 1.5 months even thought it looks terrible for those last 3 weeks?
I simply cannot justify $15 every few weeks to look a bit less homeless.

I recently moved to a new area and left my old barber of 10+ years who was about as good of a barber as I have experienced - which is why he got my business for so long. I tried several barbers in my new area and was disappointed by their service (or lack thereof) and became discouraged. So for the last little while I have been going to a salon (Great Clips) which has been only slighter better than the local barbers I have tried.
The people working at Great Clips seem to be incompetent and lack experience. Every hair cut I have had there was done by someone less than 25 years old (estimated) and there didn't seem to be any "old veterans" (men or women) in the shop to give pointers or just keep tabs on the young people - and it showed. The service was terrible, like waiting at the counter for 5-10 mins before anyone greets me and then waiting an indecent amount of time for a cut when there are employees idle at their stations - this wasn't a one time thing either, it was every visit. The cuts were always bad as well. It seems like most everyone there who gave me a cut used electric clippers almost the entire time and wasn't even with them.
Finally I'd had enough and pulled out the phone book to find somewhere new; this morning I went to a barber I hadn't tried yet just down the road from my house. The first thing I noticed was that the shop was busy and this was at 8:15 AM. That's a good sign. I was greeted right away and even though I was 4th in line for a cut I didn't wait more than 20 minutes. The cut looked great and thank God, I got a straight shave - the back of my neck was starting to look like the wolfman. This is something a salon simply won't do. It felt great. The barber did my neck first and I was so happy with the result I had him do my face as well. The cut looked great, the shave looked great, the price was reasonable ($10) and the people were friendly. Plus, there was no stupid perm smell to set off my allergies.
I am a happy man this morning! Now I can get back on my 2-week hair cut schedule. I think I might pop in every Saturday morning for a straight shave anyway.
