the fan (one that attateches to the bottom of the drive was knocking) so i flipped it
now the circit board is on top, with the fan, is that bad???

thoughts?
thanks

No, that should not be a problem. I have an older HP Vectra and the hard drives in it are mounted upside down. It is just how HP Designed the case. As for a generalization, it is really not that much different than mounting the drive right side up. The heads are still on both sides of the disks like they are when it is mounted right side up.

I think he's asking how well the fan will work at cooling now that it is essentially cooling the PCB rather than the metal surface on top. I don't know.

Can't you just feel the metal surface after an hour or two of use? If it's really hot (like over 115F), then maybe you should come up with a better solution.
