Turkey rocks if you make it correctly. People that don't like it have had the "mom overcooked it, then sliced it and put it back in the oven to keep it warm in order to dry it out further" experience.

A tip: when you cut the breast, do not slice it longways. If you cut it from the short ends it keeps the moisture channels intact and therefore makes for a better tasting turkey.

Oh, and that whole turkey makes you sleepy thing is not true. You're getting sleepy because you're stomach is full:

I see nothing wrong in passing out in an easy chair in front of a TV with a half eaten turkey leg in one hand and turkey grease running down my chin.

Seriously why the big fuss over turkey during thanksgiving? Chicken IMO is MUCH tastier and easier to cook as well.

Heck lets start a new tradition: suckling roast pig for thanksgiving FTW!!

:D:D
firstly; why not have a nice smoked ham instead?

secondly; Thanksgiving was in October. Crazy Americans. :p

I DO NOT like chicken. Maybe I've had the "opportunity" to have worked in too many chicken processing plants, and chicken "ranches" here in Kahleeforneeya, but IMO, it's one of the dirtyest meats you can eat. Look at the number of salmonella cases each year from "foul fowl"..Almost NONE of those are from turkey.Sure, one turkey case to 1000 chicken cases could be because so much more chicken is consumed, but the numbers of cases are mind-boggling.
Don't believe me, google it yourself.

I give a big  to fresh turkey. Wild Turkey is better, (no, not the bourbon) but is not available everywhere, so most of us have to settle for domestically raised birds. When you can get it, "free-range" turkeys are almost as good as wild, because instead of being cage raised, and fed mash and pellets, they have "roaming priviledges", and forage for bugs and worms in addition to prepared foods.

To be honest, I cant really tell the difference; mainly because I use roughly a quart of gravy.

I was at a cabin in Michigan this summer out in the woods on quad. I drove through some weeds and had a wild turkey come running out frightened.

This thing was so huge I nearly shat myself, it was the first time I had seen a wild one. It could have feed a few families :)

Agreed, but since every year my relatives manage to fck up the turkey, I end up using lots of gravy.

Most foods contain a chemcial called "triptophan"(sp)... it makes you tired. Turkey just happens to contain a hell of a lot of it.

That's why you serve it, makes dinner with the relatives bearable.

We're getting those things around my house too. At night, I'll hear "WHOBBLEWHOBBLEWHOBBLE" out in the woods- scares the crap out of ya :)

They're litterally the size of a small bear too.
