I finally sold CAL today

In an emotional and impulsive act of patriotism, I bought a chunk of Continental Airlines stock right after 9/11. After five years, I sold it today. It was quite a ride.

So did anyone else trade airline shares?

About the last stock I would have bought after 9/11 would be airlines. They really took it on the chin.

In fact, it looks like it was over 40 back then and right now it's 23.54.

What was your profit, if there was any Mermaidman?

At one point, I had a paper loss of almost 50%, but I ended up with a tidy gain. I sold today because I can't handle all the volatility with oil prices.

Any gain on stocks is nice. I'm keeping all of my stock.. If I were to sell it right now it would be a 50% loss. I've sold everything that was worth anything.

Were you out of your fscking mind?

[but congrats on the gain]

I traded Delta and American stock after 9/11. Bought both and swing traded for about 10k profit. Swing traded Delta couple times prior to bankruptcy for couple k profit. Airlines are actually one group I've never lost money trading. Auto is another. Swing traded Ford in years past for some nice gains.

One of my biggest miss was American Airline stock back around 03 I think when it dropped down to $2 bucks and change. I had limit order to buy but missed it by like 5 cents. That was a costly nickel. Missed out on a potential 10 bagger.

Hmmm airplane stocks musta dropped dramatically, no? perfect time to buy IMO

Gee, I don't know. Airlines have been hit by the double whammy of terrorism concerns and rising fuel prices. Neither of those have gone away and both have the potential to blow the airlines out of the air...

If it was just those two things it would not be much of an issue. Unfortunately, many were in financial trouble even before 9/11.

I usually stick to my own theory that everyone eats and cleans.
Really low - risk and usually not very profitable, but sometimes ya get lucky!
Call me a Wuss, but when my $2 Pillsbury went to $65 during their buyout, I paid off my house. 🙂

Why in the world would I call you a wuss for that?

BTW, who bought Pillsbury? General Mills? I guess so: Federal Trade Commission Considers General Mills/Pillsbury Merger
