apparently the video card is a big factor.
When i went to compusa to check out the samsung 955df,
the computer uses gf2 mx to display.
The color was dull, blurry on the corners.
today i just got my 955df, plugged into my r8500,
omg, it was so beautiful. the difference is day and night.
everything just crisp and bright.
so fyi, if you think your monitor sucks, try changing your video card instead.

I stay very far away from generic brand video cards cos I've seen a lot that make any monitor look like crap.

I'd say you just got lucky, no two monitors of any brand/model are the same, and the samsung NF tube isn't exactly the brightest tube out there

mine is not a NF, it is the budget monitor samsung 955df uses shadow mask.
i almost bought a NEC FE950+ diamontron though because i was totally disappointed by the 955df i saw in compusa.
I just want to tell the guys that are considering to buy a new monitor to consider this baby.
I bought it for 200 shipped and a 50 dollars rebate.
Don't worry about the low refresh because 1024x768@85hz is perfect for this monitor.
1280x1024 is just way to small.

I just got the 955DF, and I'm having some problems. I just exchanged the first one because I was getting serious flicker even at 1024X768. I called Samsung and they said that I should be able to run 1280X1024 with no flicker at all. I've got an MSI Geforce 2 Ti, which could potentially be the culprit. Any suggestions to try and fix this?

Thanks!

don't forget that compusa probably uses a 1 to 16 spitter to display the same thing to 16 different monitors at the same time, the output must be degraded.

For surfing or text stuff I agree, but for games? No way, the more resolution the better!

Seriously, my monitor is usually the one thing that stays around for a LONG time. (I generally upgrade my computer once a year, but my monitor is usually around for 5+ years). So, I would not recommend cutting costs on this component. Todays graphics cards are totally capable of running (even with anti-aliasing) at resolutions beyond 1280x1024 and be playable. In a few short years, I don't think many people will be happy playing games at 1024x768 (or even 1280x1024 probably). Just something to think about.

I have this monitor as well, and on occasion read a post about how it sucks. I've been more than happy with it, it seems perfect to me. Great price too.

I've installed the newest drivers (from Windows update though... Samsung's site hasn't linked to the files in two weeks). If I keep the refresh at say 60 Hz at 1280X1024, the screen won't flicker and waver. However, because the rate is so low, it quickly strains my eyes because of the normal flicker associated with the slow rate. At least that seems normal, but it doesn't explain why I'm getting that strong flicker and screen jitteriness, especially in the top corners of the screen, when I'm running it within specs at 70-75 Hz at those resolutions. I've changed my Geforce 2 drivers to several versions. I don't know what else to check now...

And sometimes it is the monitor (in general) when the video card is blamed for image quality problems.

Yep , I had to RMA 3 monitors(one at a time & same model) and the focus quality on all three was different even with the same GF2 card I was using,in the end no.4 monitor had the best sharpness of them all.I should say only one of them was RMAed because of poor focus.

955df is great monitor for cheap price. It is bright and colorful. The only thing sucks is the refresh rate. But you can still use it 1280x1024 or 1152x864 which is perfect for this monitor when playing games.

<< But you can still use it 1280x1024 >>

I just bought this monitor and installed the driver for it. I'm using the monitor with a GF3-Ti200 card and can't get the selection of 1280x1024. My selections are:

-800x600,
-1024x768,
-1152x864,
-1280x768,
-1600x900,

...and that's it! What am I missing? BTW, WinXP is the OS.

TIA, Oli

Exactly. I have two minor complaints about the monitor. 1) Mine is not very bright: my whites are not white enough, and if I up the brightness my blacks are not black enough (and the text blurs slightly more as I up the brightness). 2) Text is not always as sharp as it should look for a monitor which claims .22 horizontal pitch (translating to a supposed .24 DIAGONAL pitch). For .24 diagonal pitch... the text should be so sharp it could cut me... which it isn't. Other than that I got a great deal on it, the refresh rate seems decent, and it's a 19" flat! :)

not truly flat. notice how the tube almost touches the front panel in the middle but is about 1/4" in on the sides. I knew what I was getting though, so I'm not complaining.
Uncle Wai, where'd you get yours for $200? Is that b4 the rebate? I got mine for 238.84 shipped @ Amazon.

dchilder, do you have a TV on close by when you see flickering/jitters? I get that when there's one on in the next room. It might go away if you turn the TV off.

I think more people should use 1152x864, its a good resolution if 1024 is too small and the refresh rate is a bit poor at 1280. I'm using it on a 17 inch 753DF, and 1024 just looks too big now. I cant imagine it with a 19 inch :)

i got mine at dell, 10% + $25 off. 201 shipped, hoping the 50 rebate will come through to make the deal very sweet.
ollie, what video card are you using? my text is very sharp. I do agree with you about the white being not bright though.
After I get the monitor and start using 1024x768, my eyesight has recovered a lot. I don't want to risk again with high res.

I just bought a 955df from my local bestbuy and I love it as well, I have one issue. You guys are right, the monitor is real bright, too bright actually. I have it at max dim, and it's still brighter than my old Viewsonic E771.

I'm using a Visiontek Geforce3 Ti200 as my graphic's card. any suggestions on lowering the brightness just a few more notches?
