Today I decided that AOL has stunk for too long and cancelled. I used AIM most of the time with my AOL screenname anyway. I was wondering if I lose my AIM name since it was linked with my screenname? Anyone know? The rep at AOL didnt even know the answer :)

As long as you remember your AIM password you should be ok.

If you're looking for cheap dialup, I would recommend Access4Less.net at $4.95/mo (with $8 setup).

I can log on. The cancellation is effective in April 29th. I just dont want to try to sign on on the 29th, and not be able to.

heres what you do Sign on useing the stand alone version of AIM

it loads you buddy list automatically, then you save it to yoru computer, you can do that

so if it doesnt work after words you can just load it up again when you make a new name

I think he would like to keep his screen name. Changing screen names is like chaning an e-mail address or a phone number; it's a pain in the ass.

AIM and AOL are totally different entities I think.

Anyhow, congrats on having the curtains removed from your eyes.

I just cancelled aol as well. If you're using the same AIM name as your aol screename, then yes it does get cancelled. But like mentioned before, just save your buddy list and creat a new name. Thats what I had to do...

BTW, I got SBC dsl instead, only $7.00 more and much more speed. :)

Are you sure? I've had friends that switched out and they all had to get new screennames. I know you can port all your lists and settings over but as far as keeping the old name, i dont think thats possible.

Think of it this way Zowie, you can now message the people you actually talk to about changing your screenname and this way it cleans out the people you dont really want to talk to.

You deserve to lose your screenname for waiting until 2004 to get rid of AOL. Wtf were you thinking? Were you thinking "This sucks, and is more expensive than other dialup, but I'll use it because I haven't yet decided to get rid of it"??

One of my friends had her screen name from when she lived with her parents and they had AOL. They recently cancelled it and she had to get a new screen name.

I'm 75.7% sure you can still use it. I don't think AOL recycles SNs and they are practically independent of the actual subscription.

Yes that is correct. Now you need to make a new screename for aim, but it only takes a couple minutes.

I can also vouch for AllVantage. Good service. Couple that with Access-4-Free for an occasional backup option and you'll be good to go.

one of my old temporary AOL screennames still logs into AIM. I canceled it 2 years ago.
