I filed a complaint on my neighbor with animal control. I was told that the complaint was being forwarded to a field investigator.

Backstory:
We bought a townhome in a new development a year ago. Everyone moved in at the same time, including one of our next door neighbors (we're a middle unit). The neighbor I'm referring to is a single guy. He has a large black dog. Since we've lived here (over a year now), he has kept the dog in the garage. The dog barks constantly, and since it's kept in the garage, the bark is amplified. We've put up with this for over a year, and finally I snapped and called animal control. My main concern was the barking. A side note, which I mentioned in the complaint was that the dog is kept in the garage (which I'm assuming is not climate controlled). It's kept in the garage in the hot summer through the cold winter.

It's important to note that the guy is rarely home. he leaves for work early, comes home around 5pm-7pm, and then leaves again returning in the AM. We rarely see the dog being walked. So, I'm not even sure if he's aware that the dog is barking. However, there have been a few occassions when this guy has left the garage slightly open; both my wife and myself have both been outside when the garage was slightly open, and we both smelled urine and feces. I've also had a chance to take a peek inside the garage when it was slightly open, and I could see dark stuff all over the ground (probably feces).

I think this dog is walking around in it's own feces and urine, and I'm not sure the light is even being kept on for the dog. Not to mention the extreme temperatures that are present in the garage in the summer and winter.

I hope something is done about this. Hopefully they take the dog away, or at least talk some sense into him so he treats the dog better. I think the dog is barking all of the time because of it's poor living conditions.

While no one wants to be 'that neighbor,' you'll most likely need to complain several more times to get action. Investigators don't have the time and resources to check every complaint without multiple reports.

The dog is probably bored out of his skull thats why its barking so much.

Be funny if someone got a universal garage door remote and opened the door one day. See if the dog was even tied up or just went free.

From what you describe, I doubt animal control would do anything.

As long as the dog is getting proper food/water, and isn't being physically abused, they won't do anything.

The dog is barking because it is bored and has too much energy.

Is your neighbor crazy or somewhat unapproachable? it sounds like something you should address directly before getting authorities involved.

It doesn't sound great for the dog, but is it possible that he has a dog walker during the day? are you around while he's away and can confirm whether or not that's the case?

Or whether he's paying for a walking service that he's not receiving.

Anyway, if AC finds objectable living conditions, they'll issue a warning for the guy to remedy the situation. They won't just take his dog away immediately.

good for you for doing something anyway, most people would probably just do nothing.

since when is not walking your dog animal cruelty?

Leaving the dog in a dark cold/hot garage for most of the day, without lights is cruelty. The dog is sh!tting on the ground, and probably walking on it because it can't see where it's going. Not to mention, dogs tend to eat their own feces if it's left around and they're living in it.

Aside from that, I could smell the urine/feces from the sidewalk outside when the owner left the garage door open slightly for a few minutes.

trust me, the guy has no dog walker

hate to stereotype , but he's trash.....the guy doesn't even cut his lawn until the grass/weeds are a foot high. I doubt he'd pay the money for a dog walker.

Secondly, my wife and I always have days off of work, and there is no dog walker. Just barking from the garage.

And like I mentioned, he's never home, and when he is, he immediately leaves, no confronting him about it can be difficult. I'm not sure I even want to....I'd rather go straight to the authorities and have it taken care of.

that's not true - it's unlawful for a owner of a dog to allow it to be a disturbance to neighbors.

Good job, hopefully that dog is put in a better home. I don't like to say that but I hope the conditions are pretty bad so that when Animal controls sees it, they'll just take the dog no questions asked. If the garage is fairly clean and he has a bed with AC / Heat they might let it go... but does not mean the dog is happy. Being sheltered with more or less zero contact with humans or other creatures is a really poor condition for a dog.
