"I give you a punch in the face!" he told her, Perez said. "And he punched me in the face."
it's rare to see this kinda talk and then backing it up.

I paid for a cab with a credit card once. The cab driver tried to make me feel like I was the worst person in the world for doing so.

She deserved it for making the driver lose out on some of that fare. (sarcasm)

I can count the number of times I used a cab in my life. None of those rides felt good. Something about getting into a stranger's car...

agreed on the strangers car thing..

but you shouldnt use credit cards for a taxi. come on, the driver looses out in many ways. first, it takes longer then cash (time is money especially for $10), he must claim taxes on the tip because its documented, and he also loses the percentage that visa or whoever takes on every transaction. its bad enough to pay for a pizza with a charge card, these guys arent making enough money to demand any sort of help from them. they give you a ride, you give em money for it. since the transaction is so minor its just not polite to use anything but cash.

that, or if you really need to use a credit card, be polite enough to tell the guy youll give him an extra $5 on top of what you were already going to tip him. im sure that would avoid a punch in the face;)

So would you rather NOT get a sale, or get 96.5% of a sale?

IIRC, tips are considered income, and you must declare that.

Newsflash. Service oriented workers do not declare what they actually make in tips to the IRS. What imbecile would?

If it is in writing, they have to.

I'm not. Cabbies here are assholes, and they will get extremely pissed if you try to use the CC machine.

If I'm out of cash I tell the cabbie that I'm going to pay by credit card before I get in. If he says no, I let him go. Seems fair.

Oh yeah, has anyone in NYC used the cabs with the GPS/Zagats/touchscreen computer? I read that if the shell application crashes, you can get dumped back to the desktop and run the Internet Connection wizard and get online (it's just a stripped XP box with an EVDO card). I was in a cab with one the other night and tried everything I could to get it to crash, but no luck. It was pissing my gf off, because I was drunk and just pressing everything on the screen.

I hate credit cards and I won't be caught using one for a cabbie. Cash is the only way to go.

Because you get 3% cash back and other perks with cash, right? I use a CC for everything because of the cash back it give me.

Do you have a bank account? CDs? If so, your savings are already a few digits stored on a hard drive somewhere. Just having cash is an extra government expense - stamping out coins, wasting oodles of money making snazzy designs, and constantly trying to stay ahead of counterfeiters with increasingly advanced technology. Having to deal with cash in retail stores, either with a cashier, or with a machine to accept it, increases the expenses that the stores must incur. A lot of time is spent on counting, sorting, delivering, and securing cash. Electronic money means that most of the work is going to go toward security. In our dual-payment system now (cash and electronic), we have to secure electronic payments anyway.

Last night I got into a verbal argument because I wanted to use my Amex for a $17 cab ride home - I only had $20 in cash. I told off the driver that if he paid his taxes in full from the get go, he wouldn't have a problem with it which made him even more pissed. I gave him a $1 tip to top it off. Felt good.

I wonder if the lady said a little more to the guy than she admits.

Anyway, would the guy just lose his licence, or could the medallion be taken away? that would be prettttttty bad
