I Feinted This Afternoon... WTF?

I was visiting my step-father in the hospital. He's recovering from heart bypass surgery and doing quite well. He just got out of Intensive Care this morning.

It was pretty darn warm in his room, and no chairs to sit on. His daughter and her husband were there, all the way up to Ohio from Houston. I'd never met them before. Really nice couple. We were having a nice chat.

After about 30 minutes I started feeling dizzy. I rested my head on a counter for a few seconds. Next thing I knew, I was on my knees on the floor! I got more attention from the nurses than the heart patients! They brought me a glass of water, took my blood pressure (which was normal), then gave me a glass of orange juice. They kept asking if I'd eaten yet, which I had. Asked if I was ill or if this had ever happened before. Last time it happened was 15 years ago, in a hospital again. My wife was having a procedure, and I was by her bedside. For some reason I passed out then, too! I think at that time she was getting an IV inserted, but no such thing was happening today.

Could this be something to do with hospitals in general? I'm still slightly light headed, not much appetite, but no fever. Beats me? All I can say is, WTF?

Locking your knees does NOT make you faint. Not locking them keeps you from falling on your face IF you faint.

one of my friends passed out while he was peeing into a urinal...someone next to him was talking about donating blood, and it made him woozy. What a pansy...anyway, he nailed his head on the urinal, and fell to the ground..haha

I passed out in school at the beginning of this year. My teacher kept telling me to pay attention and I hadn't slept the night before so I started feeling sick .. I asked if I could check out and he said yes but I had to put my head on my desk because I knew I was going to pass out. Unfortunately my whole desk ended up falling over when I did. :p They called the paramedics and everything.

It has happened several times besides that. The worst was when I was standing at the toilet and passed out .. I hit my head hard on the tile .. at least I missed the toilet.

Reminds me; I was rehearsing a grade 5 play and had been standing for a little over an hour. Well, my dad had painted my room a couple of nights before, and as the fumes didn't smell strong, I spent the night in the room. As I stood, rehearsing the play, I began to feel light-headed and had trouble standing, staying awake. I asked the teacher if I could go to the bathroom.

I entered the bathroom and sat up on the sinks. That's all I remember - I woke up on the floor as a younger child opened the door. He saw me on the floor and left. I had a bump on my head and ended up going home.

Bastards! Spell check can't help me with that crap! :)

I hope it ain't talk of blood or something. There was no such talk this afternoon... at least I don't remember it. 15 years ago was the first time I ever fainted. Today was the second. I loved all the attention, but it's really not too cool. My step-father will be ribbing me about this for years!

It's all a scam, hospitals want you to faint so they can charge you to stay in there longer!

There was a jrotc assmebly at my high school once. The students had been standing for hours and had locked their knees. Then one of them passed out, followed by another. And another. Several more ran out of the room. Then a few more fainted. They finally stopped the assembly.

I don't know. It was an assembly honoring them. They had the jrotc officers standing for it. Ther weren't warned of the dangers of locking their knees.

You have ANY evidence to suggest that locking thier knees caused the fainting? I mean ,they probably blinked, too. Maybe theyfainted due to excessive blinking.

When stading at attention for long periods, especially in the hot sun, people occasionally faint. If thier knees are locked when that happens, they can't collapse, and fall flat on thier face, or hit the back of thier head on the pavement, depending on what direction they fall. If there knees are not locked, they will bend when the person faints. Thier knees will go forwards, thier butt will land on thier heels, and they will generally have a much softer impact with the ground, that is much less liekly to cause a concussion or broken nose.

I don't know, I was in high school. That was a while back. The administrators said that was what caused it. The assmebly was held indoors. It wasn't stuffy or anything.

That's used as subtle discipline in the military.

"Maybe you worry when your family is sick, and it makes you faint?"

My wife, yes. Step-father... not really ;)

That's queer as hell about locking the knees, but it seems to be a factor. However I wasn't locking my knees that I know of. I was intermittently leaning against a window sill and moving around a little. I just don't get it.

First link from google search for "locked knees fainting"
I dunno the biology behind it, but blood doesn't recirculate as well when your knees are locked.
