I feel like an awful person, but I hate Minecraft

Yes, I played with Lego a bit as a kid. I've been gaming for many years, and as an adult I love building things, whether they are software or physical structures (e.g. carpentry or models).

When Minecraft first came out it seemed silly to me because the graphics were so awful, so I avoided it for years. I finally got the pocket edition on the iPad and loaded it up. After 10 minutes I couldn't take it anymore. I tried Survival mode.

First, there are no instructions of any kind about what to do. I saw some sheep to hit. One of them dropped a block so I built a block in the middle of a forest and then was out of resources.

Second, the control scheme on the iPad is atrocious, though this is the case of course for 100% of first person view games on these things. This was actually my strongest impression: That the controls on iPad are terrible.

Am I lost, or would this be better on another platform?

There aren't any true instructions. Basically punch down a tree, build stuff. Youtube videos will help.

The controls and looks on (even the new beta) iPad version are horrible. Honestly doesn't work well on a joystick-centric controller either. It's like trying to build legos and play an FPS with joysticks. Honestly kb+m is the only way to play. They have a demo at minecraft.net.

Thanks. Yeah, I can see how despite definitely being better with a controller a mouse + KB would work. I didn't realize there was a demo for PC. I suppose I'll check it out!

It was originally on the PC, and that's where it really shines. I can't imagine playing it with touch controls... that would be terrible

I think it plays fine on console, but I've never played it on PC, and I can say that given my cousin's history of playing on the PC, I can say that a controller seems rather limiting, mostly for going through something like an inventory, where a mouse is a LOT faster than a joystick or D-pad.

Regardless, I hate Minecraft as a whole, regardless of platform. I'm not a creative person. I like having goals/objectives in games, so when you tell someone who isn't creative, "do what you want," or "build stuff," I just get bored. Basically, I played for a week, went on an expedition to find diamond, found it, and felt like I had finished the game. I cleaned up the Achievements on 360, but that's it. Stacking blocks towards no meaningful end isn't intriguing to me. I like having a story to enjoy or a challenge to overcome.

The environment was quite beautiful and simple on PC. You were looking at a unique landscape crafted just for you and you had absolute control over it. It's fun for a bit, then you realize you are building shit for really no reason and it gets boring.

Internet is fun for a while, but pretty useless because the player base is terrible (its a kids game). I had high hopes for the game, but mods can only take it so far.

I tried it on xbox and the controls were terrible.

The problem is you are playing on the console and you miss out of 99% of what minecraft can do compared to the pc.

Exactly this. With no end goal or objective it's pointless.

Its not the best experience by yourself. All the kids love it because they share servers with others. It is a lot of fun when the group starts making a huge castle and every time you log on to help build, the castle is much bigger. Just exploring what others have done while you were offline can take a nice chunk of time and then you can start adding on. I don't think you have to be an artist to enjoy the game. Everyone can be creative. IMO, people that say they aren't creative people are choosing not to be. Creativity only takes interest. Not trying to sound like a motivational speaker, but the first step in enjoying making stuff is to quit saying you aren't creative. This isn't to say you will enjoy Minecraft, but never say you aren't a creative person!

Nah, that's not the issue. I've seen it on PC, I know what can be done. It's an issue I have with the basic idea of the game--do what you want. I don't feel like swinging at materials forever and stacking them. I don't feel like running around in caves looking at stuff. It's part of why I've never been a huge RPG person either. I don't love the trekking through places and doing a lot of the tedious work involved (however, I've found myself more receptive to those things in the past few years).

I wouldn't say that outright. If you can set your own goals and like the building of things, then that's a fine place for you to play. It's like playing with LEGOs as a kid, or really with anything. It's about where your imagination can and will go with it. As I'm not one who does such things, it doesn't work for me, sounds like it's the same for you.

The problem is video games have always had a goal, even back to just beating the high score. This game has no goal so it doesn't fit in my mind.

So you are a follower, not a leader? jk :)

Heh...well I need video games to push me in a certain direction even open world games like GTA and Skyrim gave me goals and things to work for.

Even if you take legos. The sets come with instructions on how to build a specific thing. Remove that and I'm not into it.

That's why I think its better with more people. I'm not into anymore, but I played on a server with others when I did. Coming up with a goal was as easy as someone saying, "hey let's build a castle over there." Then for the next month we made a ridiculously huge and intricate castle with dungeons, a working gate, turrets, moat, and all kind of cool stuff. It was fun to see the zombies try to get in haha.

Oh, and then we had the friend that ran the server save the state before trying to see how long it would take us to blow the hell out of the castle with infinite TNT sticks.

I've been playing since mid 2012. I see where you are all coming from with the lack of objectives, but you don't really need them. I haven't even beat one boss in the game yet, I've just spent my time building stuff.

No, on no other system is this cool, there is no point to the game other than kids and adults who have too much time on their hands.

I just watched a video where someone recreated the Alien:Isolation game IN minecraft. It is insane. I don't mean buldings/ships in the game, I mean THE GAME.

I never actually tried minecraft, but some of the things people do in it is simply amazing and go beyond just building random things.
