lol, does marking your balls make em easier to find when you're crawling around the bushes at 5am looking for them? 😛

I hate to break this to you, but marking your ball with that thing on your glove is kind of like telling people that you use AOL. It marks you as a newbie that hasn't learned any better. Real golfers remove their glove when putting and just use an ordinary coin. Try a dime or a penny, it's bad manners to use a quarter or anything larger. A Krugerrand is okay though, it's large, but it has class.

Baah.. I've been golfing for about 10 years now and I still leave my glove on when I putt. I tried w/out it and it feels weird to me which throws off my putt.

Disclaimer: I never said I was any good. 😛 😀
There are a few pros who leave their gloves on when putting as well.

What is a ball marker? Do you put it down to know where the ball was or what?
You use it to mark the position of your ball on the green if your ball is in another player's putting line.

Sort of, but not really for that reason. It's so if you are playing in a group, you can play by order. Typically, the first person to shoot is the one furthest from the cup. If somebody putts the ball, closer to the cup than you in an earlier shot and in front of your shot, then you might hit their ball when you go to putt. So, they put a marker down on the green to show where there ball is so the guys further out can putt without hitting the ball.

Does that make sense?

Ball markers are for wussy players. If they hit my ball, it is their problem. Treat it like a hazzard - such as a tree. Pretend it was a stick on the green or maybe a rock. Makes the game more fun. You guys are too serious. If you are in the way, just putt. It won't ruin the game one bit.

hey.. what clubs are you using as a beginner?

Look a couple posts down. I bought a set of Dunlop something or others from second hand sports store complete with bag for like $110. It was a 3-5 wood, and a 3-PW for the irons. All graphite shafts. All it says on the clubs is TWD. No models or anthing like that.

I didn't like the feel of the graphite on the irons so I bought a set of Ping Eye 2's. Muuuuuuuch better 🙂

I usually just take my lab to the course, he not only marks my position on the green but also cheats by retreiving errant shots for me

Another manners/etique thing.

you should always mark your ball even if it isn't in the way of other players. It can be distracting trying to make a putt with another ball on the green.

If you left it three or four feet from the hole then go ahead and putt out. You did get it within 3-4 feet on your first putt didn't you? 🙂
