I feel lame asking this, but.. (sound card, driver problem)

I bought a Soundblaster PCI512 from someone in the FS/T forum for a secondary machine. I did a clean install of 98SE, got everything up and installed the latest drivers I could find for the card at Creative's site since I got no driver CD along with the card. I install the drivers and restart, only to have windows redect the hardware and tell me the drivers aren't installed. I figured I needed to do it manually, so I pointed it towards windows/system, windows/inf and all the temp dirs and anywhere else I think the drivers might have been extracted. Nothing. This is getting quite irritating so any help is appreciated.

Are you sure you didn't download and install windows xp drivers? Was the file you downloaded a zip file, or a .exe? If it is a zip unzip it to a directory on your hard drive (c:\soundcard) and the next time it asks to install the card point it to that directory. If you have already done this, make sure the pci slot is free from dust, and that the card is completely seated, and try again. Let us know how it goes.
 
Ok, I don't know if this will work, but it is worth a shot, remove the sound card from device manager, and then physically remove it from your system, reboot and run the executable. Shut down and re-install the sound card, reboot and see what happens, try another reboot and see if that changes anything.
