i'm currently 5'9'', and around 175 lbs. I use to be lean and toned, but now I feel like a tub of lard. Before things get any worse, I've decided to start watching my diet, and perhaps even start running.

All this I plan to do starting tomorrow.

soOooo... the current plan is to start jogging MWF mornings for around 30 minutes on a local track. But in terms of diet, i have absolutely no idea what i'll be doing. All suggestions/encouragements welcomed. Oh, and I can't afford any type of fitness club membership, and working out at the campus gyms only serve to make me feel fatter and weaker than everyone else, so running would be it.

any suggestions on what else i should do?

Take PE classes at school. I gained like 20lbs during college. To take care of that, I took Basketball and Tennis in the same semester. Then I ran every other day. I was able to lose all that weight I gained.

lots of water, high proteing diet, low carbs, low sugar
and did I say LOTS of WATER? :D

Be careful with the running....start out with walking and work your way up to
the running slowly and gradually increase it.

Anything too drastic will cause you to possibly lose motivation and give up
as well as be hard on your body as it is used to being relatively inactive.

Aquaman would have to agree with you about the running. The joints & cartalidge have to get use to the movement and walking/jogging is the best way to go :)

Exercise. I eat whatever the hell I feel like eating, but I hit the gym 3 times a week and its all good. 'Course, I'm naturally built pretty big, so your results will vary. Throwing some cardio in there (like jogging) works wonders too.

You shouldn't feel intimidated in gyms. People will respect you there, just b/c you're putting in the effort to go.

[EDIT] I suXXor at t3h spelling.

Actually the majority of people at your typical gym aren't in great shape, they are there to get back into shape.

The biggest and simplest changes you can make that'll make a dramatic difference is stop drinking high sugar drinks (ie: pop) and cut out fast food. I've cut out fast food, and pop entirely and keeping with a regular gym routine (on campus) and have lost 30 lbs since February of this year. As for the rest of my diet, just eat everything in moderation, none of that atkins or anything, just good solid and nutrious meals.

you are probably keeping crappy hours. dont eat any midnight snacks, and try to keep a regular schedule. having a weird sleeping schedule puts your body out of whack and i think it screws with your digestion/metabolism.

Yeah, sleeping regular hours helps with building and restoring muscle and keeping a good metabolism throughout your day.

Being an engineer, I don't have the luxury of this one though. :)

If you plan to workout, consume about 2000 calories a day. If not, about 1500.
Check out your BMR (Basal Metabolic Rate)...tons of calculators come up on google. It is how many calories your body will burn per day no matter what you do. Cut that by about 500 calories if you do not plan to exercise, and you'll lose about 1-2 lbs/week...which is healthy.

I agree about cutting the sugary drinks (drink water and diet soda).

Also, you don't have to eliminate fast foods and other heavy foods entirely if you learn to eat in moderation. Most places print the nutrition info online, so based on that, just eat until you've reached a calorie limit and stop. Usually it's hard because you'll still feel like eating, but after 15-20 minutes you won't feel hungry anymore (and not as tired as if you stuff yourself).

Oh yeah, get enough sleep and try to eat breakfast every day, to make sure your metabolism stays up

I was 5'8", 180 in July of '03, and I've lost 30 lbs. since

Damn, I'm 5'10", about 185, and I feel light since I was up around the 215 mark at the beginning of the summer. I haven't really done anything, just have been eating a lot less lately (yay for the dining hall being a half mile away).
