I faint when I see blood, or get an injection. Do you?

I wouldn't consider myself a wimp. I play paintball. I had open-heart surgery (to fix a minor problem) right after I graduated high school. I've had a lot more experience in the pain area than most people my age, and pain doesn't really bother me all that much.

So why does this happen?

My doctor says it's actually a physical condition. That some artery or vein constricts my bloodflow or something when I see blood.

I still think it's strange. When I see a needle coming for my arm, it just hits me like a ton of bricks. Sweating, restlessness, the cold-needle feeling like your leg is asleep, a brown curtain coming over my vision, nausea, all at once. It's the worst feeling in the world.

The things that set it off are:
1. Blood in movies.
Not gunshots (those don't bother me), but knives and things. Just hearing someone say "slit throat" or "slit wrists" gets me feeling dizzy. Hell, I just got a little sweaty while typing it.
I most definitely can't watch slasher movies. I tried watching "Scream", didn't even make it till Drew finished dying.
Disembowlings REALLY get to me, as do things to do with the kidneys. I saw the end of the 6th sense, and it made me feel really bad. Unbelievable.

2. injections. Lay me down, give me a cold compress, cuz I'm out for the count.

3. not eating properly. If i don't eat anything substantial, and then eat a lot of sugar, I get these feelings a lot more easily. I believe I'm slightly hypoglycemic.

I'm just plain pissed off that this happens. I can watch the most violent gunfighting Schwartzenegger, Die Hard, Lethal Weapon movies over and over and it won't affect me at all. Bring in a knife, or stab a kidney and I'm done for. Holy crap, I can barely stand to write this post. WHY, dammit!

I KNOW I'm not alone here. Who else experiences this? Does anyone know how to stop it?

hmm.. maybe if you poke yourself with a needle daily, you'll get used to seeing blood;)

Now that you mention it, it has gotten easier over the years.

Forgot to say, it's also somewhat genetic. My brother is the same way.

Take your skirt off? :D

Seriously, not much bothers me; I think it's pretty cool watching my blood squirt into the needle when I have blood drawn. But I'm fascinated that your doc thinks it's a physical thing. I wonder what causes it.

He says he KNOWS it's a physical thing, and that many of his patients have it. I'm sure it's not related to being wimpish, it's just a reaction my body has. But why, and how do I stop it?

I have a girlfriend who takes blood in a lab for a living, and she says that it's guys who are more likely to pass out when they have their blood taken over girls. FYI!;)

Probably wouldn't be good for girls to be fainting every month like clockwork. 'Sides, we all know girls are tougher than guys. Lord knows I wouldn't want to go through childbirth.

If guys went through child birth we'd be severely under populated!;)

Hubris, thanks for the links. That "common faint" seems the closest (the symptoms seem similar), but the cause isn't an "emotionally traumitizing event". The cause isn't even something that bothers me, it's just stuff that evokes a physical reaction for some reason.

And the rest of you guys who called me a wimp, eat me. You'd be shaking like wee babies if I ever caught you on the paintball field :p

I normally like to watch them as they put the needle in my arm. The physical cause intrigues me. I think this might have been one of those selected against traits back in prehistoric days but doesn't matter now, cuz i can't think of why this would be a positive trait to pass on

I dunno, I think an avoidance of bloodshed, especially your own, would be a good survival trait. Course, like many of our modern issues, it could be a result of societal changes affecting the body and causing new additions to the genetic code.
