four problems on the test, and the last one requires applying one or more of a couple of known formulas in a new way. aarg. When the prof. wrote 3 minutes left on the board, over half the class started laughing. what else could we do. If I'm lucky, I may break 60 with partial credit and a kind grader, but my real hope is that the half of the class that laughed wasnt joking and that the other half was too busy crying.

And yes, I studied for the test. At the least, I can feel good that I tried.

update: I got a 64, and the class average turned out to be a 56. hardest test i've ever taken

So you lost 40% of what... 15 - 20% of your grade?

That's not so bad... Sucks when it happens, but in the long run it's usually less impacting than you initially think.

My advice? Sleep for a few hours. That makes everything look brighter.

the midterm is 20 percent of the grade. so it's not too bad. and I am/was ahead of the class average based on the homework and quizes. I'm ok, though a nice curve would help...

I've taken exams where the mean was less then half the possible points. It doesn't matter. They are curved. Of course there are always annoying kids who just get them all right, but what can you do?

Good luck, on my physics tests each was 10 questions worth 1 point each the grading went like this. Correct answer +1, no answer 0, wrong answer -1. Only classes I took that graded like that.

20% of your grade isn't too bad. It's a bummer though when you study hard, and the test is ludicriously hard. It can feel like wasted effort. If so many people had so much difficulty with it, that reflects poorly on your prof. for either being a poor teacher, or a poor test designer.

So you are saying that your final is going to be 80% :Q

If I were you I would be very worry.

Go back over you exam, and find out why & how you didn't get the problems...reread & study the area that you didn't get, because it is a warning shot...the net test is for real.

It could mean that the system is weeding the people out of the program, if so many people failed the test.

All of the first year engineering courses at the Universities here in BC. Canada weed out 60% of the student in first year (and they weed out 30% in second year). The exams are bell curve, so the student could still fail with a B average.

Curves are so deceptive. So what if you have the highest score in your class and get an A if you don't know anything about the subject and you actually only got 50%. They really shouldn't use that. But I guess if they don't only a few people can end up graduating.
