:(

My first ever web site.

Text(click to get to the homepage)

I used dreamweaver at first, but now I can get by with notepad, and I am still learning a lot (using CSS etc. ). I definately know some steps I have to take to get more advanced, and I am going to teach myself php and java when I get some time off from work over the next month. I also want to familiarize myself more with databases (mysql specifically) so I don't have to use MS access. My question is, is there anything else I can do to get better? There is the obvious of examining others code and designs and creating practice websites, but are there any forums that you guys hang out on etc? Its just a hobby, I hate using stuff but not knowing how it works. :)

By the way I know my layouts are pretty bad also, I just did not want to use those dreaded templates.

Do your worst!

omg...horrible. That looks almost as good as the Warcraft fan site I designed when I was in 8th grade :p

I think the main problem is the graphic design. It is obviously not your forte. You need a LOT of work on that. Not everyone has the talent for that, so you may need to employ someone who does.

Then you need to work on better layouts of the page itself.

I still actually use tables instead of CSS for a lot of what I do simply because CSS has problems with different browsers. I use some CSS, but until it works the same in all browsers, I'm sticking with tables which will do exactly what I want them to do.

Also both sites are using the same layout - a layout that was okay...back in 1990.

So...there you go. You said do your worst :p

Drop notepad and grab a nice text editor. I use TextPad, but I know there are other good ones out there.

Also, CSS is great to learn, but when you finish, be ready to teach yourself PHP & SQL...

I take pride of my photoshop design skills as I have won a decent amount of competitions with them, although that was mostly signature compeitions, and I guess it does not carry over into web site design.

Signature Competition?

Samples?

Not trying to make fun or look down on you, but the worst thing someone can do is not to give out constructive criticism in something like this.

I'm decent at photoshop. I'm not the greatest, but I'm pretty good at design and logos, etc.
