Hi Anand,

have you checked out Team Anandtech Seti@Home lately ??

http://setiathome.ssl.berkeley.edu/cgi-bin/cgi?cmd=team_lookup&name=Team+Anandtech

We are up to 19th position in the club rankings (soon to be 18th)..

We can possibly get up to around 15th but we simply are not big enough to go higher..
On a WU to member ratio, we out produce almost everybody...

So how about some support ??
Give us a link on the front page, and maybe a quick mention...

Thanks for your time,

Colin.

Thanks Colin! I considered sending an E-mail myself but I thought it would be better coming from a "bigger" member. At least Anand now knows that we are asking, no begging, for some help. [rant]I don't want to sound like a crybaby but I think it's unfair that the RC5 team has a link on the front page and the SETI team doesn't get any notice or recognition whatsoever. I mean, aren't we all supporting the same team? Why don't we have the same support? Hopefully that will end soon...[/rant]

Ahhh, it's Friday! I can already taste the beer. mmmm... beer

Are you sure that's my money you're "tasting"? :Q Hey, you left yourself wide open on that one!

Your money is as good as mine (rleach2 and I are playing poker later)

Rob

Edit: If you think that's bad you should've seen it before I edited it! I think you better edit that one below this too rleach2... ;)

He actually worked for Picker (I think that's how you spell it) in Ohio but they were bought out by Marconi or something, and he lost his job.

[rant] I'm going to toss a gascan on this thing right now... Is this thread just going to die without the intended response? I don't know how the rest of the team feels but I'm very disappointed to see no feedback to ColinP's Email. I've been a longtime Anandtech member since the early days of regular outages and username resets. Gratefully that's a problem of the past (credit to all involved) but it doesn't excuse the lack of response to this thread.

Is there some reason Anandtech is not supporting the Seti@Home team? This lack of support makes me think that we're at best not appreciated and at worst not wanted. There are a lot of us here who contribute our personal time to the team. Our climb up the Club rankings is proof of our efforts. I even paid a visit tonight to work (on a weekend day off) to bring my herd back up due to several power outages (sever thunder storms). If our "sponsor" isn't willing to even acknowledge this kind of effort then why am I bothering to do it for "Team Anandtech"? [/rant]

Rob

Edit - I'd like to clarify something. I'm not trying to speak for the team. I know there are members who out-produce and/or out-contribute me. That said, it doesn't change my feelings. rleach2 (the guy I recruited) and I have been talking about this lately and we both feel that if there is no "rc5-like" Anandtech support then we are going to either find another team or just quit. We feel that too many of us contribute our own time and efforts to a team that hasn't considered us worthy of sponsorship or even recognition. That's a long edit but I think it better describes what's above. Hope that explains it...

Rob,

I have often felt exactly the same way...

I am here purely because of the Team Anandtech members (all projects) and the atmosphere here..
I came here from Hardware Central because we couldn't get a team set up there. Now , they have an official team with a lot of support from HWC.
I don't think I am the first to try an e-mail to Anand, I can't explain the lack of interest/response in the past. I did e-mail him from my works e-mail address so I will try to check this (I actually brought my laptop home this weekend, don't know what I was thinking)..

To be honest, I would change the team name in an instant if we all had another BBS to meet up at, I have absolutley no loyalty to Anandtech, just it's members...

cheers,

Col.

In the beginning I beat my head against this particular wall to no avail. I was debating/flipflopping between ArsTechnica, with front page support but they steadfastly refused a seti/distributed forum, and AnandTech where there was a forum but a front page refusal to acknowledge our existance.

The results are obvious, and ArsTechnica eventually grew large enough and started it's own forum on an independant server. Of course now that the head bonehead at the Ars forum recognizes that there is sufficient traffic to support a distributed forum he's trying to fold it back into the commercial forum, but that's another story.

The AnandTech team may not be a top contender but we have a much closer knit team, based largely on the forum presence from the beginning. We continue to grow and overall we form what is probably the largest coherent distributed computing team(across all projects) on the planet. As the projects come and go and the team and front page people mature I'm sure any current shortsightedness will eventually come into focus.

Anand hasn't even given you a reply Colin? I realize that he's pretty busy, but this seems downright rude.

I agree that it's a shame that Anand doesn't give us more recognition. I really enjoy his site - reviews, web news, and especially this forum... it gives us a sense of community that a lot of other teams (and web sites) don't have. I'd be extremely bummed if you guys left for another team.

Yeah, I find it pretty annoying too that Anand won't even reply and say why he won't endorse us.

I agree with Nexus9 ,though I'll give Anand another few days before I start ranting ;).

Incidently ,we managed to get his attention once before when I posted that CALL TO ARMS thread ref OB ,when Mgallik (I think it was him) E mailed Anand & I believe he gave him a link to the thread where at that time their was about 70-80 posts ,he returned an E mail to Mgallik (correct me if I'm wrong).
If he doesn't even respond to ColinP's E mail within 2-3 more days then maybe I should post another 'Call to arms' thread this time asking Anand for a reply.
What do you lot think?
In the meantime ANYONE reading this post who also believes that Anand should at least replie to us should add their vote here :)

Robor

I hope you & Rleach2 don't leave us ,whilst its true that Anand doesn't give us any recogntion (so far) ,I know that I & many other members do appreicate both your efforts towards the team.Yours & other new big guns have significantly boosted our output :D ,(as well as the many new smaller people)

We have already lost Darkone to OGR (at least for now) & losing another 2 big guns would cripple our team & possible lead to a mass exodus :( .I hope you at least wait for a while before consider leaving.
I believe that this teams existence is mainly down to 'the community' we have on this forum ,this is still here & even if Anand never endorses us I wouldn't conisider that a reason for leaving.
But each to the own............

BTW incase I hadn't already spelled it out ,we need you!;)

I crack for RC5 but I completely agree that you should have at least a minimum of a response from him. I think that the RC5 link on the page shold be Distributed Omputing and link to a page that talks about each of the projects TA is working on, and then there would be a link to each page for SETI, RC5, etc.

Looking at the responses I think a lot of the SETI members feel the same way I do. We don't like the fact that we're not supported by our own website but we have such a strong and tight team we stick together anyway. The competition among members and teams is what fuels these Distributed Computing projects. Because of our stats guys most every member knows their average daily output and what position our team's position in the Club rankings. I think that were it not for the effort put in by our stats guys I would've left a long time ago and rleach2 wouldn't be here (did I mention he's addicted to the stats?).

So while I'm still not happy that we're not supported I'm not going to turn my back on the great members on the team. I'll stick it out until either we're supported or something better comes along. I think ColinP put it best with

<< "I would change the team name in an instant if we all had another BBS to meet up at, I have absolutley no loyalty to Anandtech, just it's members" >>

. I hope that doesn't come across the wrong way. Anandtech is a great website. I visit several times a day because IMO it's the best hardware review site and the Forums have the best members. I also feel that we have the best SETI team out there and deserve a little support.

I guess Anand is out of town but this is not a recent issue. Not a week goes by where one of us doesn't request a bit of support from Anand/Anandtech in the form a mention and/or link on the front page. Hopefully when Anand returns he'll respond to ColinP's Email with an answer one way or the other. If we're going to be supported that would be great but if not I'd at least like to know why not.

Gee hang in there guys!

I can only speak for myself, but right now (and I'm sure it's the same for a lot of the others) I'm on a mission. Take Anandtech to the top!

Right now it's RC5. The focus for me is simply to power AT to the top of the list. I have personally spent thousands of dollars in the last two months on this maniacal pointless quest. There are others that have made bigger asses of themselves in the same way on the same mission. You'd have to be deaf and blind to have have missed the howling cries that went up when OGR got in the way! Nothing will be allowed to stop us because we are a TEAM.

The RC5'rs have a bloody minded focus on /. and there are so many of us gibbering all the time that you might think you are unnoticed and 2nd class. Not so. I read Assim's and ColinP's posts all the time and I share your woes/successes because seti is family.

When the . is slashed there is going to be an enormous amount of unfocused power of which, I'm sure, a significant portion will be unleashed on seti. We need you guys to keep it going, keep us within reach, because we are a'comin'. Why don't we switch a machine or two over? Because it would be token! Concentrate your forces and crush the enemy remorslessly. Move your forces and hit them again!

Keep us informed of your progress. More posts of the order Team AT-SETI 15 days to grind down User Friendly! The following will build. Most of the RC5 crackers weren't picked up off the front page but rather from active recruiting in the forums. Give them a target, something to beat!

Promising them a chance to find intelligent life in space may do it but I don't know. This forum is one the few places that we've managed to find it on this planet!:):):)
