Here's the story:
I.E. 7 was acting up, it was very slow, and as I discovered, was hijacked. I did some antivirus scanning and fixing, which removed most malware except for one Win32 trojan alureon. Afterwards, I.E. 7 seemed to work better, but still wobbly. I couldn't get the one trojan off, and figured it was probably embedded more in the browser than on the O/S. As it didn't seem to be affecting anything else, and as I.E. 8 had just been released, I thought I would just go ahead and update to the new browser. I didn't want to install I.E. 8 over the infected I.E. 7 so I thought it would be better to uninstall I.E. 7 first. The problem was I had Service Pack 3, which made uninstalling I.E. 7 impossible without uninstalling SP 3 first. So I did that, and then uninstalled I.E. 7, then reinstalled SP 3. Then finally I downloaded I.E. 8, which went smoothly.
Except I.E. 8 just won't start/launch.
Not sure what to do at this point. I'm on XP Home with a broadband connection using Opera.
Could it still be the trojan? Or did something get affected by my uninstall and reinstall of SP 3?
Thanks for any advice.
