i drool for this laptop hard drive to come out

Hmm, am I missing something here? I've had 48Gb IBM Travelstar in my IBM Thinkpad T23 for some time now. It is 5400 rpm drive which has even lower seek times than Toshiba's hard drive. How that new drive is different from the Travelstar 48GH and what exactly are the improvements?

the travelstar for one thing uses 16 gig platters. and 3 of them. so its 12.5mm. doesnt work in half the laptops out there that can only take 9.5mm. also the toshiba has 16mb of cache and 20 gig platters and only 2 of them needed

My W2K/XP OSs would love that increase in HDD speed. My firewire transfers would probably speed up as well. Don't let your laptop crash if you have write-behind-caching enabled. You could lose 16MB of data when that buffer gets wiped out.

Have you seen the latest drive from IBM? 9.5 mm, 5400 rpm and it's extremely quiet...that's the one I'm waiting for. I have a Toshiba now and the thing "klunks" half the time.

the 32 48 and 60 gig 5400 rpm drives from ibm are 12.5mm , not to mention only 2mb cache. i had a 20gn, and like after a while some ibm drives the bearings squeal. they are still ok, but noisy.
