I drive a BMW X5 Diesel but still pro-Honda/Acura

My loyalty still lies with Honda/Acura. Every time I see an Acura on the road I smile. Every time I read about a new Acura model it makes me happy. My first car was a 2005 Acura MDX and I loved that car but I got rid of it because I wanted to spend more time driving and less time at the pump. The only reason why I got the BMW was because of the much better mileage in the diesel compared to the MDX. I may return to the Acura family when their next generation MDX comes out next year. I love the new RLX.

BMW owners are not good company.

BMW owners are not good company.

What do you do? Hang out with a bunch of people who own bimmers because you own one? Are you talking about online communities? Did you pull an engrish and really mean to say "BMW is not a good car company?"

Can you elaborate on this statement other than making a baseless generalization of a "BMW owner?"

Did you pencil out the number of miles you'd need to drive to cover the added cost of the x5, with all the fuel saved? Just curious. Discussions like that tend to prove that a high MPG conventional auto makes more financial sense than a similar hybrid, for example.

Yeah, seems an expensive step to get a little better fuel economy if you like Acura.

Pretty much this, I find the BMW community much like the VW community, there are asshats, but for the most part super helpful.

I'm a current accord owner and would like to stay in the honda family in the future. (i'm talking 3-4 years or more here) I will probably go for a used car.

I''m excited for the new NSX as the halo car, but will probably be out of my reach.

the tech in the RLX looks promising but i'm not too impressed with the styling of it.

the Lexus GS is a real looker and would definitely consider one in the future, or a used 3/5 series.

getting rid of the TSX and replacing it with the ILX and civic power train is a joke though. the new TL better be a home run or else acura will still be continuing to go in its stagnant direction with the lower models.

Honda/Acura forum communities on the web are also very helpful.

Fanboys are not good company.

FTFY

I like talking to people that like cars. However, fanboys of any brand irritate me. I'm not talking about the guys that generally prefer one brand, I'm talking about the rabid fanboys that personally identify with a particular brand and have lost all ability to think rationally.

First I find it egregious to judge two car companies on the quality of their crossovers, the most compromised vehicles built. Sure they are a great "do nearly everything" car...but they don't do anything well. Compare a 3 Series and a TL, or a RL and a 5 Series and get back to us.

Second, you bought a car, not friends. I don't understand why you would choose a car company based on who drives what. Buy a car because you like the car...not the people/image.

Finally, I like both car companies. I think both of them make some quality cars, although Honda/Acura has lost its way in the last 5+ years with styling and technology. I really hope Honda/Acura can start making fun cars again like the S2000 and NSX before they just become another appliance peddler from Japan.

I agree with Acura part. Once you go Acura, you tend to stay with Acura. My 1998 Acura 3.5RL has been a good car, but if I were to replace it, it would be either a TSX or TL.

It's not the money saved that interests me. It's the time saved. I found that, with the MDX, I was at the gas station once a week. I live in the City so MDX was killing my gas. With the diesel, it's so much better, time wise.

I'm talking about online and at the dealership. Some of the BMW people take themselves way too seriously.

If you seriously feel that way, you could have gone with an Audi Q7 diesel

I checked them out. The dealership was next to the West Side Highway and the salespeople were dour. Worse, the car looked strange. And it took like 2-3 months to build. Horrible. I love the looks of the X5.

How is the ride in the X5 compared to your MDX? Gas aside, are you saying the MDX was a better ride?

I've had a couple of acuras, and they aren't bad for what they are... a honda with leather on the door panels and a better radio. That appeals to certain people, and I can certainly understand why.

The handling is much better in the X5. The car is far more sure of itself. Much more planted. The steering is heavier. In the X5 I feel like I'm being pushed as opposed to being pulled. The X5 feels smaller, which is good.

But all this is compared to my 2005 MDX. I believe the 2007 and later MDXes with SH-AWD are much better in all aspects compared to my MDX. I'm not sure how they compare to the X5. I never even went for a test drive because the 17/21 mpg was a complete turn-off. However, I'm hearing good things about the new Earth Dreams engines that Honda is coming out with. The next MDX will be a hybrid, I hear.

Acuras also have an industry-leading AWD system. They are usually packed with technology as well.

Gotcha.. So they added a tiny rear diff to a FWD accord chassis, then used that for every single car in their range - from the "accord pickup truck" on down.

I have an affinity towards the X5. One day I will finally get one. I worked at the Bosch automotive proving ground for a couple summers when I was younger. One of the vehicles that the performance group tested was the X5. It was pretty amazing to see them light up all four tires.

What year is your X5?

The Honda nav is by far the worst thing, I went to search on my friends and typed in Starbucks, it said the closest one was in Canada....wtf. That and my old blackberry had better graphics and menu design that their brand new one did.

A Santa Fe is about as close to an MDX as an MDX is to an X5.

OP you sure you aren't thinking the X3?

I'm loving my first Honda, a 2004 EX V6 I picked up out of the blue.

Just an incredibly well-built car. Not the fastest out of the gate (I'm past those days anyway), but it gives you an abundance of quiet power when you really need it on the highway, at around 70-90 mph.
