I downloaded the free GTA software and it's Ok. Is it supposed to be great?

I know its version one. Is it better using a steering wheel? I am using my keyboard. I do have a Microsoft joystick.

No point in buy a steering wheel.

You will just be more frustrated. Just use the keyboard/mouse and you'll be fine.

Were you expecting uber high res graphics or something?

I jump in the car and I smash other cars and try to run over people and the cops shoot at me.

Is that about it?

1) Do the missions.
2) I think there are lots of mods for it, try searching for those.
3) Get into random police chases
4) Go on a rampage.

Back then, there were no car games where you could drive around fully populated cities. Any game where a cop chased you, it was you and a cop on 1 long road. It was the beginning of the open-ended gameplay in GTA3.

That is all there is to it.

The novelty of any GTA game dies fast.

This is true. I was so disappointed in GTA3 after everybody raved about it. A modern version of Carmegeddon. bleh.
