I don't want to work 8 hrs a day staring at a computer screen

Yeah, I enjoy working on and with computers, but lately it's become more of a hobby than a career path. I find myself getting headaches and blurred vision after staring at a monitor for a little while. And programming, while rewarding and interesting, is tough and convoluted for someone like me with almost no logical thought. So why am I majoring in Computer Science? I chose CS because I thought that having a CS degree would land me better jobs than Information Technology or a Business Degree and I wanted to learn how to program well. But now, I don't want a job programming. I wouldn't mind a job where I worked with the hardware aspect of computers, but even still, I have fallen out of the loop lately. I couldn't even tell you how fast the lastest processors are running or which video card is better.

This happens to almost everyone, doesn't it? You get through 3 years of college only to find that you're not as passionate about your career path as you once were. I don't even know what I'd really like to do now. Owning my own business would be cool, but I don't know if I would want to specialize in computer still or move onto my current passion of running. All I know is that I want to finish my CS degree, because that is definitely something I want. I just don't know where to go after I graduate. I could not survive in an office job. Blah.

(now playing: Blotto - I Wanna Be a Lifeguard :p)

No office job at all. I can no longer sit in front of a computer for hours. I certainly wouldn't mind using a computer, but sitting there, hunched over a keyboard, no matter what I'm doing, is just no fun. I want a job where I can move around, do things that don't require squinting into a monitor.

You should just get a job in construction. Making bucks, getting exercise, working outside.

If I wasn't such a skinny wimp, I would. That could be a lot of fun. I love being outside, using my muscles. Too bad I weight less than the average 6th grader ;)

You can switch toward an MIS degree, as in business stuff with computers... maybe a little finance background too. CS is tough to begin with (getting a decent job)... if you have no passion for it, it's a lost cause altogether.

At least with MIS, you'll have a broad range of skills (including what you already know in CS) to market yourself...

Would your shenanigans be harmless and amusing, or would your shenanigans be cruel and hurtful?

What about maintaining infrastructure, like the physical hardware, cable lines in large facilities, etc? You'd still need to work on the software side, but maybe less? I don't work in that field, so not really sure myself.

That wouldn't be too bad. Just so long as I wasn't stuck in a tiny cubicle all day. being able to move around, stretch my legs, get a change of scenery would be enough for me.

Working on a PC isn't so bad when you've got an LCD instead of a CRT monitor.

I agree, though, even with ridiculously high refresh rates....sitting in a cube all day staring at a CRT makes you go BATTY.

And there are plenty of IT jobs (even programming) that don't have you sitting in a cube. Heck, even IN 'cube' positions - the project leads and management team all have nice offices with windows and all!

If you are just worried about the work being *boring* after 10 years or so...well, yeah, that's a given.

On the other hand, there is nothing you can do to avoid it. They wouldn't call it "work" and wouldn't start paying you at $60k+ a year if it was always fun to do.

(OTOH - hey, join the Army! Travel to new places, meet new people, then kill them!)

I know a couple Michigan State Police Troopers. I wouldn't put "meow" past 'em.

exciting jobs are usually the dangerous ones:
officer, bounty hunter, infantry, stunt man

or the illegal ones:
gun runner, drugs, assassin

if you;'re good in customer service, you can work as an asst mgr at walmart, then get promoted to mgr

Same thing happened to me. I actually DID have a job sitting in front of a computer all day. I quit.

Entering the Navy this fall.

Never, never, never choose a degree because you think it will get you a job more easily if you don't like it. The "best case scenario" will become the worst thing possible. There's a good risk that if you're good in the field that you'll get a good job in it and then will come quickly to hate that job, but will be reluctant to leave it because you need the income and because "it's a good job and [you] should be happy". This can lead to some rather serious early burnout issues and throw your life into one hell of a blender.

Don't ask me how I know.

Maybe I'm out of the loop, but I thought there was a language filter on AT.

Man I was just having a discussion with my brother on our 3 hour trip back from our parents house today!

I sick of the same old shyte! I feel like saying fukitol and quitting my current job and starting my own PC repair /building business, I know the market is here where I live and would be a lot nicer (I think) not being behind the same old desk every day and instead meeting new people and making lots more money while I'm at it.

I'm going to give this some serious thought in the next month or so, between this, work and the girl I'm seeing I feel like I'm fvcking drowning sometimes though!

Oh well! :p
