I'm sure this translates across many careers.

Have you ever been in a situation where the organization you work for is on the verge of changing for the better (in a great way), and 2 or 3 non-visionairies plant seeds and destroy any and all momemtum - and they always seem to be in key areas where noone can or will oust them.

Why is it this happens and why are they so doggone powerful in an organization?

There is one person I deal with on a daily basis that does exactly that. It is annoying as all hell.

It's worse when your in an organization that is heading to the pooper. The local franchise that owned most of the Burger Kings went under. I quit about a year before it happened, the management was primarily a couple asshats that couldn't run a business anywhere but to the ground.

When did "noone" become a word? Does the business you are in require literacy? Are you one of the visionaries? Did you stay at a Holiday Inn last night?

When did forgetting a space suddenly make someone illiterate?

if STFu and n00b are words, why can't "noone" be a word?

Apples to oranges.

We have an acronym, slang and a misspelling. The misspelling is what 'old crusty' took issue with.

human nature...

the solution is to get rid of them... i know it's hard/harsh, but if they are in the way of progress, then they need to either get on board or leave.

edit: get rid of by firing, not by killing

One reason it happens is that the underminers tend to be vocal, and those who favor the changes aren't. The people who want change have to speak their opinion as well.

Any change in an organization is scary to people (in fact, one of my favorite possesions is a cheap ballpoint pen with Dilbert's PHB saying "Change is good... You go first."). The inertia in the organization tends to dampen the rate of change so those who want it need to keep talking it up. Eventually people will accept it once they understand it's a done deal.

I've had decent but not spectacular success getting changes made even though some people in key positions were against it. The key is not to back away from announced changes because that encourages the luddites. When people say it won't work, I say that might be true, but we're going to try anyway.
