I don't understand why salespeople act snobby

So I'm in the market for a new Plasma TV. I've decided from reviews and research that I want a Panasonic TH-42PX50. I've found it for $2800 shipped online from a respectable retailer. These are also sold pretty much everywhere locally, BB, Circuit City, and other "high end" TV Video/Audio stores. So I walk into Pauls TV, one of the "High End" places that I figured would be willing to haggle on the $3k MSRP. And I'd figure they would be more likely to treat me better since they are based on commission.

Now first off I admit that it was a Sunday and I wasn't dressed to impress. So I walk in and am not greeted and barely acknowledged. And when a salesperson does come up and talk to me he is very condescending and acts like I am taking up his valuable time. I ask him if I can see an SD signal on the TV and he switches to an over-the-air HD signal. Uh, that's not what I was looking for. So anyway, long story short I went to another store and someone else got the commission on my $2800 sale. A person who greeted me nicely and quickly haggled on the price.

I've had this experience before where salespeople will judge me by what I'm wearing or whatever other reason and totally ignore me when I'm ready to spend good money. If I was a salesperson I would try to go and help every single person that walked into my store, money is money no matter how the person looks who's giving it to me. I don't understand this snobbish attitude, just makes no sense to me.

Cliffs:
Go to TV store and get ignored by snobby sales guy
Go to other TV store with better Customer Service and he gets the commission
I don't understand stuck up salespeople

Step 1.5 where you whip out a wad of cash and dangle it in front of him in a taunting gesture is also amusing. 🙂

they act snobby b/c they suck at their job and they know it, and soon they'll be fired.

🙂

I told my wife that we pay cash for our vehicles from now on... budget and save for them. (earning interest on the money, then purchasing outright, vs. paying interest.) Except that I refuse to throw away money on a brand new vehicle (cars coming off 1 year leases, demo cars, etc. are a much better bargain; full warranty, lower price, etc.) Otherwise, I'd wear my crappiest clothing and go to the dealer after cleaning the stalls in the barn... and carry cash for the vehicle I want. I'd love messing with the salespeople.

I'll play devil's advocate and point out the obvious fact: They don't know if you're just a "tire kicker" (so to speak) who will waste their time or if you're actually going to buy something. Sucks, but you did admit you weren't dressed to impress. I guess they figure the snotty attitude will weed out the non-serious types quickly even if it turns off a few serious people.

That said: I'd take Dullard's advice and pull a "Pretty Woman"-type move on the snooty salesperson who blew you off.

Doesn't matter if they know you are going to buy or not. It is their job to help you. I would have gone back with the receipt and showed it to the manager, not the stuck up sales person. I don't get dressed up to buy things. I had the same thing happen at a car dealer once. I left, bought the vehicle down the road at a different place then went back and showed it to the finance manager at the first dealer. The salesperson who refused to acknowledge me actually acted pi$$ed that I did not buy from him.
