TBH, for me it's this:Get the 4k trilogy which was released recently. 4K Ultra HD >>> Blu-ray >> DVD > VHS.
SVHS >VHS
DVD >>>>>SVHS
BR > DVD
4K > BR
The big big big jump was DVD. I don't care all that much if I'm watching BR or DVD for most things. For some stuff it matters more. I bought a BR of Lawrence of Arabia when I already had the DVD version. Same with Seven Samurai. But for most movies I really don't care that much. David Lean's LOA was filmed in 70mm.
My displays are all 4K, but mostly I'm not close enough to them to benefit from the 4K > BR to kick in, as are most people. I bought one or two 4K sets but haven't bothered to even check out 4K offerings since.
