I don't understand the whole 'gaming' thing.

My gaming rig does double duty as the system that I use for things like browsing ATOT while I'm working from home.

For this reason, it definitely needed an 8 core processor and 32 GB of RAM 🙂

my gaming rig cost me about 600$.

I occassionally play call of duty with friends who live away. It's lightweight and doesn't require too much thinking.
Without the social aspect I don't really play anymore. I watch TV series mostly.

Playing video games is like playing with toys for adults. Instead of holding your snow speeder toy in your hand and making up sound effects with your mouth you're instead piloting one and bringing down an AT AT yourself in 5.1 surround sound. It's pretend play taken to a whole other level. Plus it looks less ridiculous to your family than playing with your black series figs...

i spend ZERO money on horse riding. I may have rode a horse or two when i was young and it was still cool, but nothing since.

I just don't get people spending money on whips, caps, boots, spurs. The maintenance of the horse, housing, even medical care. It's insane - can they just not go out and enjoy a breath of fresh air?

SINCE I Am from the future..........on my planet I have a cpu with over 100 cores and i have over 8,000 megs of ram and i use 32 video cards in sequence.........and that's just a barebones set up....

I game because, for some fucked up reason, it's illegal for me to hunt down and kill people in real life nowadays. WTF did the Corps spend all that money training me to kill...only to tell me I can't use that skill anymore? Video games allow me that little pleasure.

I just always figured those that don't play games sucked ass at it and quickly gave it up as too complex. Oh with all that thinking and using your hands to change directions, move, and perform actions.

I guess I can see why though sometimes. Play an RTS like starcraft with a korean and before you even complete some buildings they will have 10 zerglings at your base lol.

Only 8GB of RAM?

A couple years ago I retired one of my physical servers that had 8GB of ram and a core2quad cpu, the server was around 10 years old. A week later we got new computers at work... 8GB of ram and i3. lmao. Like seriously? Here I am retiring a box that I felt is too old for my personal use and my workplace thinks those specs are suitable for productivity.

We are getting new PCs again shortly, and again, only 8GB of ram. WHY?!!?! We managed to convince them to give us 16GB though, and also swap out the 5400rpm 500GB drive for a m.2 drive. Not sure how big... hopefully at least 500GB. They'll probably want to "upgrade" us again in 3 years and we'll have to fight for better specs all over again.

Suum cuique!

It has increased one thousand fold!
Entry level PC with 8MB RAM, today 8GB...

Sad thing is my threadrippers have more L3 cache than my entire PC had RAM in 1997!

I was assuming this was one of those 'parody' threads, but a search for "I don't understand the whole" only turns up this thread. What is it a parody of?

My work laptop has 16GB. I would think that should be bare minimum standards these days given how cheap it is.

Sadly this is no longer the case overall. (although there are still some decent sale-deals to be had)

July 2020 I got 32gb's Corsair DDR4-3000 (2x16) for $94 and in January 2021 I got 32gb's Corsair 3600 (2x16) for $115 both shipped from Amazon.

The 3000 has doubled in price and the 3600 very close to it. 😕

I now have two million times as much RAM as was on my Kaypro II. I could store an hour of raw 4K video in memory yet Windows still insists on using a page file for spreadsheets.
