It can only move on one axis or whatever its called as opposed to two if you're holding it with your hand.

It still must move more than a tripod though.... For instance, at 300mm, would a monopod be still enough to take a decent shot?

If the light is good, sure. They help mainly by taking the weight off your arms and steadying your hands a bit.

Plus they can be used as weapons.

I'd buy a nice monopod before a cheap tripod. Would you really use a tripod much for travel? It depends on what you're doing I guess, but there are lots of places where you wouldn't take a tripod, or even not get in certain places at all with it. You really don't want to cheap out on a tripod.

Monopods are excellent for things where you need a lot of manueverability fast - sports stuff (on the sidelines), action shots, etc. Also, they're nice if you're hiking; they double as a stick in a pinch, so they aren't actually "extra weight" (that and they weigh next to nothing if you get a decent one).

I was out mountain hiking in Alaska last month, the monopod definitely came in handy, especially in the steep terrain areas where setting up a tripod and making it level would be a pain in itself. Plus, at 300mm, or even 430mm (on my Lumix FZ20), a monopod is all you need if you have an optical stabilizer. I doubt using a tripod would give you much more clarity if you already have the OIS built-in. And like stated above, they weigh a fraction of the weight of a tripod, plus can be strung easily on your bag.
