Unsure what the confusion is about how they can do it...rich people can commit suicide the same way that poor people can, but due to their wealth they can do it in fancy hotels and exotic locations.

Personally, if I were rich and wanted to off myself, I would hire a professional hitman to off me at some undisclosed, random time in the near future, telling him it was my every intention to fight back. I'd go out playing the ultimate first person shooter...

From the reports I read it sounded like he was in the position a lot of older stars seem to get into, of not really having the funds to maintain the lifestyle. I imagine it could be quite depressing to live the life of a prince and come to the realization that you can't keep it up.

Some of them have had a rough path to becoming rich.

Celebs have been known to come from poor and or troubled back grounds. They were homeless, abused, on drugs, etc. So, when they get rich, they just gloss over their pain/experience or further amplify it.

Some do seek help and fix their problems (like Drew Barrymore) - others can't or won't get help (like Amy Whinehouse) and others let it fester until something bad happens (like suicide or a public incident).

People adjust to their environment and get used to things. From a poorer person's perspective getting rich is a dream. Someone who has had money for decades, well, that's all they know now, that's just the norm. I mean, just take us for example. There are terrible things happening all over the world, we live a much more privileged life than quite literally billions of other people on this planet. Yet are you always happy because you are rich and we have so much more compared to the majority of the world?

I've always had money but I've never been happy (eg. 30+ years). On top of that, now I have chronic pain and am in the early stages of some neurologic disorder (probably MS). I totally understand how Robin Williams felt and do not fault him one bit for committing suicide. Honestly my first reaction when I heard the details was that of jealousy that he was able to take the plunge. When I was 10 I gave myself a deadline that I would do the same when I was 34 if I still wasn't happy since I figured 25+ years of being miserable was enough. I turn 35 in Oct so it looks like that won't be happening though but if I got hit by a car I wouldn't be too upset.

i always tell myself that if i was to the point where i was going to commit suicide, i would just stop doing things i hate and decide to spend my money doing what i want. i would quit my job and do things that make me happy

and i just have a paltry amount of money compared to someone like robin williams. how can someone that rich commit suicide? he had it better than %99.9999999 on the planet! he could do pretty much anything he wanted to!
See sig.

I don't feel like ATOT is in general responsible for anyone's mental health. The very idea is absurd. But still, you should get some help.

I'd think the rich, or at least the comfortably well off would have a greater chance of suicide.

Money doesn't solve your problems. Look at Robert Downey Jr. He was addicted to drugs and reached lows that I can only imagine in his life and managed to come to terms with it and overcome it. It definitely wasn't easy for him and I'm sure it still isn't.

I always loved the "money doesn't buy happiness" argument. Of course it doesn't, that's just silly, but on the other hand you don't deal with the many-many problems that poorer people have to deal with. Those problems do cause unhappiness.

Also, being wealthy allows you many more options to deal with depression. The rehab he could afford is probably a factor of 10 better than what the average person deals with in rehab.

i dont understand how ANYBODY can commit suicide but that's because I believe death is truly the end and there is no shot at any sort of conscious existence after death

i feel like people who commit suicide in some weird way think they are hitting a "reset" button but that's not what it is

.

Yes they do. On the other hand, the price paid by the rich to get that rich causes it's own set of problems

Help from what, reality? And who's taking the responsibility for helping and understanding, friends and family? Or are they passing the buck off to someone else. Sounds like he's coping with his demons to me, which is more than most people who hide from the truth and their deepest feelings.

Maybe he just has more genuine pain than most people. The pain and suffering can sometimes from a mineral and vitamin deficiency, although big pharma wants you to think it's an SSRI deficiency - which only exacerbates the problem. So that would be my advice, figure out what your brain and body lacks.

Clinical Depression is a disease that can affect anyone rich or poor. I could control my own problems better with depression and anxiety when I didn't have 100 other physical problems crushing me, but that isn't the case for everyone and there is no golden physical item that can cure everyone.

Bradley your advise is fucking poisonous to those with depression. You could cause real harm to people just barely holding on by saying things that could put them into a nose dive. Save your conspiracy theories about how big pharm just wants to make you worse for P&N threads.

Whenever Richard Cory went downtown,
We people on the pavement looked at him:
He was a gentleman from sole to crown,
Clean-favored, and imperially slim.

And he was always quietly arrayed,
And he was always human when he talked;
But still he fluttered pulses when he said,
"Good-morning," and he glittered when he walked.

And he was rich – yes, richer than a king –
And admirably schooled in every grace:
In fine, we thought that he was everything
To make us wish that we were in his place.

So on we worked, and waited for the light,
And went without the meat, and cursed the bread;
And Richard Cory, one calm summer night,
Went home and put a bullet through his head.
--E.A. Robinson, 1897

Reportedly, not a new phenomena.

I've known some pretty rich people who had it much better than me. I was aware that they were much more prone getting depressed when compared to myself. I have this explanation that having a great life sort of weakens one psychologically because they never had to feel down. Perhaps, they have less of those neurotransmitters or whatever that makes them feel joy, because they have always had plenty of joy. An analogy would be someone who never had to lift anything heavy and gets hurt when he has to move the fridge.
Someone who has had very hard times gets very rich later in life. He will probably be partying all the time and no depression.

doubt it. a complete end of existence sounds pretty good to me. never having to do anything... great.

some of the best feelings i've ever had have been from quitting/canceling something... job, a book, outing with friends, etc. although I realize once you're dead you can't enjoy that sensation.

i don't get why more people don't commit suicide... i was frankly surprised when i heard the stats after RW's death about how it kills more than car accidents, certain types of cancer etc. guess i wasn't so wrong after all.

Robin Williams sold his last house to pay his bills. He paid like $35million in alimony. He was screwed. His show got cancelled. He was probably looking at jail time if unable to pay alimony.

http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2013-...-for-husband-stuck-with-lifetime-alimony.html

Same thing for Robin Williams.

He wasn't rich anymore!

Wow did not realize he was going through a divorce. Then yeah in that case he probably had practically nothing left. The thing with a divorce is there's often permanent monthly money that gets ripped from you as well as losing everything you own. The whole system is engineered to screw over the guy as much as possible to the point where he's practically living on the street or jail.
