how the fuck did the adults let it get to this stage? the doc should be fired and parents jailed.

why the hell didn't they take the kid to the hospital? they would have immediately recognised malnutrition.

why is everyone blaming the doctors? first, it was the parents choice to have them brought in to the hospital just to remove baby teeth. second, the doctors finished their job successfully, and i doubt they would have pulled extra teeth without the parents consent. third, its the parents fault for blaming everyone but themselves for letting their child STARVE to death. i mean come on, 3 weeks? no parent can possibly be this stupid, and dependant on another person just to force their child to eat something. and she's 8, its not like she's a teenager or something. beat the crap outta her to eat if need be. the parents have no one to blame but themselves. if anything the parents should be arrested for child negligence.

My son had a bad bout with the runs and throwing up. Cuold not keep even the tiniest sip of water down. I took him to the emergency room (on a Sunday) and they put in an IV. I was seriously worried about dehydration.

Had those parents had any brains after a day or two they should have noticed the child was not eating. The doctors can share a little of the blame because they could have urged the parents more strongly to bring the child in instead of prescribing nutrional drinks. Of course we don't know the exact phone conversation. But man it took 3 weeks for this to play out. Were the parents totally dense?

What the hell maybe that is the way healthcare works in England.

Re-read the article.

"No one saw her after she was discharged from hospital," Waller, 34, told the inquest Monday. "I told (a child psychologist) she was sucking on a watermelon, she told me that was enough for her to survive on."

Janet Waller said she and her husband phoned the hospital to express concern about Sophie's weight loss and refusal to eat, and were told not to bring her in, but to talk to the community child psychologist assigned to the case.

Sophie's father, Richard Waller, said he phoned the psychologist "every day, sometimes twice a day, to say how unwell she looked."

"I kept asking her to come round but she said she would next week and there was nothing to worry about," he said.

And really?

beat the crap outta her to eat if need be.

:disgust:

The parents aren't blameless here, but neither is the shoddy system that they relied on to help them care for their daughter correctly.

Why didn't the parents take their bloody kid out to the hospital?

That dentist needs to be punished. He should not have removed all her teeth. That obviously traumatized the girl who already had a fear of dentists.

you don't think its pretty stupid that the parents gave her a watermelon when she has no teeth? and just because the psychologist isn't answering you don't think to look elsewhere perhaps? you think there's only one child psych in the entire country? look, phoning and whining to others and getting zero response is no excuse to sit on their thumbs and do nothing about it yourself if all else fails. if you want to save your child when you obviously know its not gonna end well, you don't sit your ass by the phone hoping for someone to call you back.

The kid must have had some nourishment if she lived for 3 weeks.

Anesthesia and a nasogastric tube. Squirt some formula in the feeding tube throughout the day. The psychologist can counsel her about the trauma of the NG tube insertion, later.

Girl: "I said, 'No'! But they didn't listen!"

Psychologist: "When your parents say to do something, it's important that you listen. Would you like the strawberry Ensure or the vanilla?"

I really think that this is partially the responsibility of Britain's socialized medicine. I know that here, the doctors would have no problems seeing my son, and as a parent I would have had no reservations harping them in person to get my kid taken care of. I wonder if the whole mentality/culture of dealing with medical problems has changed over there...

Still, those parents are idiots. Even without medical care, I would have pried me kid's mouth open and poured some smoothie or something down her throat.
