I don't think kids ride bikes anymore

Kids aren't even excited about getting their own car / drivers license as much anymore.
Maybe not around there. My youngest is a few weeks away from taking the test and very much looking forward to it, same with the closest friend. Oldest kid was stoked to get her license ~7 years ago.
Do you have kids now? How would you parent? Also a question for anyone who says they never got hurt because there's a lot of talk about past experiences but none about what you would be allowing as parents now. Free roam? Riding in the middle of the streets. No helmets, etc.
Kid wears a helmet and has lights on the bike for after dark, but beyond that, yeah, free roaming, be back by 9PM or whatever.
If anything we should be allowing free roaming even more since kids typically have cell phones, just make the agreement that they will check/respond to texts or there will be consequences. Before they had cell phones, we picked up some of those handheld radios, they have a pretty decent range.

I'm glad I was a kid before all everyone did was stare at a screen of some kind all day and every waking moment was a supervised and structured activity. My friends and I pretty much spent all day every day outdoors running around (gasp!) largely unsupervised.

Oh and fully on-topic, kids don't ride bikes as much anymore because it requires physical effort to ride a bicycle which might cut into sugary-snack & soda-chugging ... hard to balance/pedal when your 40 lbs overweight!

A couple of skinny kids whizzed by me on the sidewalk today on bikes, just racing. Probably around 10 year olds. I was going the other way. On the sidewalk... the street in front of my house is in terrible condition, I don't know how people can stand to ride on it on a bike. It's even a pain to drive on it! They paved it maybe 15 years ago but guess they did a really lousy job (cheap asphalt!!!).

Damn it all I always wanted one of those battery powered toy cars you and a friend would ride around in as kids. Instead I would be relegated to pedaling like a peasant. 🙁

3 wrecks as an adult. 2 of them, the helmet saved my skull

Never wore a bicycle-helmet as a kid (late 1970's) but later when I started doing tours in HS and mountain-biking as an adult I always do. I'm very pro-helmet ... honestly even though I've wiped out more then once I can't say I've ever hit my head hard but that was just luck.

Riding anything that goes much faster then walking-speed on the street especially is a bad idea.
