I don't think I'll buy a raptor drive again...

I figured it would be louder since it is a 10,000RPM drive, but I had no idea it would be this loud. Perhaps next time i'll just get 2 smaller 7200rpm drives and put them in raid. Not sure if the speed is worth the noise. My computer is amazingly quiet compared to my old aspire case w/ P4 Prescott in it, with the exception of the raptor. Oh well. Lesson learned. :)

Yeah, you may have a bad drive. I've had two 74GB drives, and they weren't that loud.

But IMO, they aren't worth the price. I went from those two in RAID 0 back to a Seagate 7200.7 80GB drive, and the difference is barely noticeable.

Why not just pick yourself up a hard drive silencer? Nexus makes the Drive-a-Way, which is rated for up to 15,000-rpm hard drives. There's a great video review over at 3DGameMan that compares the noise levels - really cuts them down. It's not cheap at $60, but if you want to kill noise and keep your drive, it's a good solution:

btw how are you liking your HZ sticks? :)

Cool! I'm going with a similar setup, except with a 165 which is currently being air-tested. If it can hit 2.6 I'm buying :) Also going to use a DFI Ultra-D board. Ah, I need a second job lol.

yeah I am hoping I don't have to build again for at least 3 years. Maybe just a memory upgrade and extra video card down the road. This was not an inexpensive project.

Yeah, you're not kidding! So far mine is running about $1,800. I'm selling my laptop and getting my apartment's security deposit back next month, which means I really only have to shell out a couple hundred bucks for it, but still...have you read my savings plan article? Check it out if you haven't:

Damn? $1800? Is that with a monitor?

I spent a hair more than half that on my Dell refurb with a 7800 GTX and 2GB of ram.

No, this is just the box plus a UPS; I already have the peripherals plus a sound card and DVD burner. Parts list: antec slk3000-b, (2) 120mm fans, ocz 520w powerstream psu, dfi ultra-d, 2gb g.skill ddr500, opteron 165, thermaltake big typhoon hsf, 7900gt/vf900/ocz copper ramsinks, raptor 150, linksys usb wifi adapter, and a 660w belkin ups. It adds up quick :p

Yeah, i'm kinda in the same boat. I bought a 74GB raptor for my system drive and a WKS3200 for my data drive.

I install most apps to the 320GB data drive. I had UT2k4 installed on the raptor and later moved it to the data drive and I seriously don't notice any real difference in quality.

I suppose its good to have your system on a drive thats guaranteed for 5 years... makes me feel a little better at least... but worth the 3x price? Nah, probably not. If I had to do it over I would have just bought two 320GB drives.

You could just buy a seagate...5 year warranty on all drives.

I would be careful, since this is very subjective. I have a 74g Raptor, and there are times when it is accessing a crapload of files (booting a game for example) when the head noise kind of all runs together into a low roar. I'm exagerating, but compared to the 450g WD in the other bay it is definitely loud.

The loudest it has gotten so far is when uninstalling the ATI catalyst app from add/remove programs. For the record, Catalyst 6.4 is absolute garbage.

Anyway, I downloaded SpeedFan and did the SMART deep online scan and analysis or whatever and it said the drive is fine. How reliable is that scan? it read 90% fitness and 96% Performance. I would have hoped for better from a new drive, but I guess it's not bad considering the speed it runs at. I think my case amplifies the sound significantly. It is mounted using the rails that came with the case, so I am unsure if I can dampen the sound at all. Any suggestions?

It's a 10k drive! Did you want it to sound like a 4200 rpm notebook drive?

Of course it's loud.

depends on case. good case like the antec p180 have sound deadening walls/rubber grommits for drives. others...well the vibrations just gonna travel

I think I may try putting some thin rubber spacers between the HD rails and drive itself to see if that helps.
