I don't suppose there is a USB circuit breaker on motherboards

In what can only be described as moronic I plugged in a hard drive with my computer running (using one of the 4-pin plugs from the PS), which caused a spark which I assume made it's way down the usb cord (was using a USB-->IDE connector) and this has apparently shorted out 5 of my USB ports.

At least I assume that is why they are not working. Is there any way to diagnose this or anything?

Short of plugging something into a USB port and seeing if it works, there's really nothing an end user can do to diagnose a USB port.

are both the connectors that you access on the board at the back of your PC case, as well as the internal USB headers that you can add connections to both bad?

assuming you can't get either of them to work.. then you may want to try one of these to get you back in business....

What's weird is that 5 of the 8 on the back went bad. I actually have the same board you have (UD3P) and just bought it.. so I'm really mad! It was the most perfect board before I screwed it up. And I know if I send it in I'll get some crap refurb. I could exchange it at Fry's but naturally I had to cut out the UPC for rebate purposes (that has to be one of the reasons they offer rebates).

What really concerns me is that who knows what else went bad, since I do not use half the ports. Hopefully the USB circuit is well insulated.

sorry to hear it....

The question becomes.. would you rather have a refurbed board (assuming that's what they give you) or your existing board .. with who knows what having gone wrong?

If you want to stick with your existing board.. I would do the following...

1) disconnect all of your usb devices.. and any front usb ports from the motherboards usb headers...
2) then Go into the the system folder/device manager under control panel.. and remove/uninstall any USB related device...
3) reboot windows, and let the operating system rediscover/install them.. and then see if they work....

Aside from that.. for peace of mind.. you may want to
1) run a stress test (Prime95 or Orthos)against your machine to ensure it's running as it should..
2) as well as MEMTEST to test the memory...
3) and possible a Video stress test ... and if those 3 all run ok. .then I would feel comfortable that the problem is
4) run a CHKDSK against your drives to ensure nothing was corrupted as well

If all of those check out ok.. then I would feel pretty comfortable that the board is ok, other than the USB section....

Heh, it's a "Hackintosh" install so I can't do any of that! Maybe I'll use this opportunity to install windows.

I wonder if they are more likely to give you a new board if you send it in sooner than later. Sleep no longer works, either, so I am thinking of sending it.
