I bought this ugly blue compact computer from work about 3 years ago and It's ALWAYS been slow! I bought it because the onboard video went out and I just simply replaced it with an agp card. It stacks up like this. amd athlon 1.2, 256 megs or sdram, 32 meg tnt 2, 40 gig 5400 rpm harddrive, windows xp home. It's just always been slow. the harddrive spins up way to much for small tasks like opening a browser or media player. I don't have the money to try a new motherboard or faster hardrive. I personally believe that it is one of those two. Even after a fresh os install it's sluggish. I can't play an audio cd straight from one of the drives because it just skips to much like the whole system is bogged down. That's just not normal. what do you guys think? Is this just the kind of performance one can expect from using a cheap motherboard on a pre-made budget compaq pc or am I missing something here. BTW, It's not an defrag issue or any software issue that I can rule out. There's no background tasks running either. I just don't think 5400 rpm drives are THIS slow.
 
You did a clean install on it? Like no programs added at all?

Did you install all the drivers for the motherboard and everything? Probably VIA drivers is what you'd want on that thing.
 
yeah well I wiped out that restore partition from the factory and installed xp home oem myself. I didn't install any MB drivers however. could that be it?
Where the crap could I find those drivers because I know the only thing I'm going to see at hp.com are onboard video and sound, modem etc.
 
Dont' go to HP.com. They will have totally out of date stuff.

What you need to check is your device manager - (Right click on 'My computer', go to manage, then click on device manager). Check if the IDE/ATA controller is listed as a VIA one. If so, then go to here and download the Hyperion 4in1s and install them.

Check to make sure everything has its drivers installed.
 
Also, after getting the motherboard drivers installed, check the Primary IDE Controller and Secondary IDE Controller in the Device Manager and ensure that they are using DMA mode on the Advanced tab, not PIO mode.
 
Also windows XP like more than 256Mb of ram too. I've noticed that machines are noticably faster when you upgrade to 512Mb
 
Well if you want to run WinXP faster upgrade your whole system, every single component. Or buy something fast from ABSPC.Com, NewEgg's parent company.
