I dont like Black History Month

If this hypothetical White History Month existed... would it be European White History... or American White History? If it was American... would it celebrate White's contribution to society outstanding from any other race's contributions? That would be kind of pointless...

I know you want to say that White History Month couldn't exist because of double standards, but I'd be more inclined to say it wouldn't exist just because it wouldn't be very practical.

well its certainly for christmas, both practically and historically in a nation with a large majority of christians, the fact that other holidays take place during the same time is a fortunate coincidence, which school administrators wisely intended for the break to include

my post was mostly a lament that the month perhaps most apt for "christain history" comes over a time when school was out

I don't get anything you're trying to say here. All Nik is saying, is that <insert race here> History month shouldn't exist. Why not? There's no reason for it to. If one exists for once race, one should exist for every race, and if that was the case, it would be pointless.

As far as I can tell, one of the main reasons for it being there is so that we can all "learn and remember" what the Black's have done, etc. I agree that we should learn about the accomplishments/struggles/contributions/etc that blacks have made, but there doesn't need to be a Black history month in order to do so. Like many people in this thread have said already, we should learn about all races and cultures throughout the year.

Yes I totally agree....I wasn't implying that we should learn about the white people who did this, or the chinese guy who did that....I wasn't saying that at all.... All I was saying is that we should learn about history, regardless of the race, throughout the entire year :beer:

How do they get the short end of the respect stick? It seems to me that anyone reported about in the media who happens to be black gets talked about not as a person, but a BLACK person. Like the media is making a point that he's black.

It seems to me that people go out of their way to walk on egg shells around blacks because they're afraid that they'll say something that will be construed as racism, whether it is or not.

I totally agree with you! I would bet you that Blacks would be totally happy if they could have it that way. But unfortunately, schools do not intertwine the two--or at least not as much as the Black history truly deserves.

P.S. Besides, it would be a symbol of a racial healing, or at the very least the first step to mending of relationship between the two.
