I don't know why my friend does this

Out of nowhere, he'll tell me "So Barbara and I went to the coffee place last night."

WTF? Who's Barbara? I have to ask him what the hell is going on.

And then sometimes, he'll go "I went to the PDSOD and I saw the new DODOES."

WTF again. He brings up such an obscure acronym and expects me to know what it is. Sometimes he just makes it up himself and I have to ask for clarification.

Damn, it's like he's starting a story from the middle or is continuing a conversation I was never part of.

Maybe his short term memory's not too good. Or maybe he's just a little out of it.

Try abbreviating every single word you say for a while (except maybe 'I'), and if he asks you to stop doing that tell him to stop doing it first.

There's nothing wrong with him. I think he's doing it just for attention, like Skyclad1uhm1 said, or to seem like he has things going on that I don't.

acronym people scare me... especially the ones who can't immediately say what it stands for.

Here's your ticket for admission to a life of PR work.

I've seen people like that before - they like to deliberately do it so that for a few moments they can feel power over you and then you have to ask them a question and it reassures their cracked self-esteem.

That's probably it. If somehow I do know what he's talking about, he seems a bit surprised.

Public Relations work... I find they like to embrace acronyms without knowing what they mean.

Maybe its your brain that is not working right. Maybe he had just told you who Barbara is but you had zoned out and didn't process any of it.
