So I waited till the last min to type my english paper, no big deal.
Same thing to learn study for a physics test I have in 5hrs, still no big deal.
I'm typing along and decide to listen to some music, good so far.
Hmmm, music seems stuck. Now that I think about it my mouse is stuck, DOH! computer is frozen. Luckily word just auto-saved.
Restart.
Detecting IDE Drives......

Nice, no drives detected. Not so cool.
Restart, ah there we go, back to normal.
Start Windows normally
XP load screen, hmm no animation.....no HD activity.

Master boot HD-0 to HD-1
Loading Win2k.
Checking disk E: (XP drive)
Finished check, no error messages.

File is the last manual save, half the paper is gone.

Well boys and girls, I just learn how sound and light work and what their respective properties are. Now if I can only hold it for another 6hrs, I'll be good. On to the paper. Btw, if anyone has a clue what went wrong or what I should try to fix my computer feel free to reply.

Worst I've had is with Micro Emacs on the Amiga (500), With CTRL-X-F you could safe the file and immediately exit the program. Useful when closing down the machine afterwards anyway. It would just overwrite without asking if the file already existed. Normally that is.

I had saved a few times at the start, but then continued to type for 4 hours without saving. I hit CTRL-X-F and got 'File already exists'.
But... the program still closed.

After that I saved under different names every 5 minutes or so, and never closed the program down till I was done and had made sure it was saved.

Oh, and the strangest/funniest I have seen was at the university, where several Physics students had been working on their paper for about 6 hours straight without saving. It was due that afternoon.

There was a guy there who had been the 'hardware man' of that part of the Physics department, as he knew a lot about electronics and stuff. When they got computers it was only logical that he would do that too. But... he was totally illiterate in 2 areas: Social interaction with other humans, and software.

He walked up to the computer behind which the students were working, turned it off, moved the monitor aside, opened the case, replaced the memory, closed the case, put the monitor back on and turned the computer on again. Then he walked away, without saying a word. All that time 2 students were staring at the computer dumbfounded, just having lost 6 hours of work about 1 hour before the deadline.

It was very nasty for them, but we sure as hell laughed our *sses off ;)

Further example of how outside the world that guy was: There were signs allover the computer room that it was not allowed to take food or drink inside. The professor in charge of the building caught a student eating there once, and was just busy ranting to him when our guy walked past with a plate full of food in one hand, and a soda in the other, on his way to his computer.

The professor turned around angry and stormed off.

If that guy had caused me to lose 6 hours of work before a deadline, he would have had an unpleasant chat with my baseball bat. Things like that will teach you to save more often. I once lost the same paper twice when in high school. I also had a lab report consumed by the network in my senior year of college. The best was my roommate sophomore year... He had completely finished a paper, and hadn't saved it since starting. His computer froze, and the whole thing dissappeared after he rebooted. He proceded to put his fist through the wall.

A value lesson I learned at a high cost:
waiting until the last moment to do anything is not the best strategy for success.
