Anywhoo..

There's only 2 thing moving in your lappy (assuming there's nothing in the optical drive), your HDD and the fan. You should be able to feel air flow out of the exhaust vent if the fan is spinning. You might find some utilities that will tell you haw fast the fan is spinning.

One thing to keep in mind is that laptop fans do not run constantly. They only run when heat dictates that they should. In a cool ambient environment (about 68 degrees F) - my lappy fan rarely comes on. When it does, it is very quiet - but I can feel it by the case's vent in the rear or side.

So, to answer your initial question, your "eeyores" can only detect the fan if it is running. Most of the time it is not - at least on my Lenovo T60.
