I don't know how to use an old-fashioned scale.

Let's say you have a scale that can only weigh objects up to 10 lbs. You want to weigh an object that weighs over 10 lbs; therefore, you place an object on the opposite side of the scale that you know weighs exactly 20 lbs. To now balance the scale you have have to move the weights on the scale until it reads 5 lbs. How much does the original object weigh?

So you're always adding the weights together?

Pretty much. If there was no 20lb weight, your object would weigh 5 lb, so to even out you had to add 20 more, hence 25 lb.

I going to have to change the data in my lab book.
