Hello,

I'm at my second year in college and decided I really can't live on public transportation. A bike seems to be the best option for me. A friend of mine recommended a Yamaha R6 but they seem a little pricy. I am looking for something between 2k and 3.5. Anything good for that price? I just need to get around and occasionally go on the highway.

SV650 Suzuki. Plenty of power and lightweight enough for a beginner. Another good choice is a Kawasaki EX500 (Ninja 500). Not as fast as the SV but cheaper.

Before you go and spend the money on a bike go to your local dealers and find information on the beginners Motorcycle Safety course. Yeah it might cost money but its best to

a. Know how to ride
b. Find out if you really want to ride

Stay FAR FAR from sport bikes if your looking for transportation. A good standard or even cruiser would be best. Going the cruiser route opens up lots of aftermarket for bags and such

You do NOT want a 600cc SuperSport (CBR600RR, GSXR600, R6, ZX6R/ZX6RR) for a first bike.

In that price range the best picks are a used...
Ninja 250R
Ninja 500R
Ninja 650R
Suzuki SV650
Honda Shadow

Before making a purchase take a rider training course. This will give you a real good idea of whether or not you really want to ride, and it will give you the basic skills you need to start learning to ride.

Also budget for helmet, gloves, pants, boots, and a jacket. After training, gear is the most important investment you can make.

If you are a college student and a beginner, you may want to take a look at getting a scooter instead. They aren't as big/expensive as a regular bike, but they are manuverable and fun to ride from what I hear. Generally a 150cc should get you wherever you need to go. The 50cc bikes are much cheaper, but I wouldn't recommend one unless your driving is purely inner-city due to limited top speed. I've been considering one myself as I'm in the same situation. Gas is expensive these days.
