i've never played golf and don't know how the game works. but i've seen it on tv a couple of times. 🙂 anyway, i have access to a golf course and i'd like to take it up. i'll be looking for an instructor to teach me but i've got a question about the golf clubs first:

should i buy a bundle set with different types of clubs or should i buy individually? since i'm just getting started i don't want to spend $$$ on them. also, what are the essential golf clubs i should have?

looking at this thread, i see there is a driver. what are the other types of necessary clubs and what's the difference between 8.5 and 9.5 (some kind of numbering system)? any other advice welcome!

thanx - chipy

Drivers, Irons, Putters, Wedge, etc.

Just get a beginners set (~$100), you don't need anything amazing like Callaway if you're a starter.

Go to a garage sale, get a cheap set of clubs.
Go to a driving range... hit the balls. Hit the balls with each of the clubs a few times.
Go to the golf course... have fun.

The more seriously you take the sport, the less fun you have while you're playing it. (Seriously)
But, if you love being competitive and putting a lot of pressure upon yourself, take up the sport seriously. It'll drive you nuts. You'll get pissed at yourself for missing a 4 foot put.

But, if you play, suck at the game, and go with the attitude of having fun, you'll laugh when your ball ricochets off a tree that was out of bounds, lands behind you in the fairway, and holds up the tightly wound 4-some behind you.

the number is just the loft on the club, or how many degrees the face is angled. you'll want a higher number as a beginner. to start, i wouldn't even buy clubs, just rent or check 'em out from the shop at your golf club and see if you even like the game.

Seconded. When you take lessons, the instructor will most likely start you off on the most used common clubs first. Pickup a putter, maybe a 7-iron, sand wedge, and a 3-wood to start. I'm sure learning to play these clubs you'll learn very fast whether you'll like the game or not.

You need a driver, woods, irons, pitching wedge and putter. You can probably find a decent beginner set of clubs for around $100.

Take up cycling or surfing...clubs and money don't make a god damned bit of difference, the only thing that will improve your golf game is practice practice practice...and even then you'll probably only be average at best.

GET LESSONS.

GET LESSONS.

GET LESSONS.

If you teach yourself, you will screw it all up.

Trust me. There's a very specific and counter-intuitive way to do it, that you'll NEVER get if you don't get soemone to teach you.
