I'm running into a new problem with my upgrade project. Thanks to Anandtech forum members I was able to install Win 7 64 bit on my Vista 32 bit box. I have an Acer Easystore h340 windows home server box on my home network. We store all of our documents and media on it and share with the other pcs in the house. After installing Win 7 I reinstalled the WHS client software on it, it found my home server and put a link on my desktop for the shared folders on it, this was the same as it was on Vista. But when I try to change the location of My Documents from my local hard drive to the server it denied access and said I didn't have permission. When I click on the desktop link and try to access the folders it also says access denied because of lack of permission.

I'm doing this as the administrator. When I originally installed the WHS client software on the Vista box it just worked. I've done some searches and so far I haven't been able to figure this out. Any help would be appreciated, all of our documents on on that box.

It did the same thing after creating a new admin account.

Edit: I just found out something, in the shared folders there is one labeled Documents, one Photos, Video, etc. I can access all of the folders except the documents folder. That one says I don't have permission. I'm chasing links that say "more information about permission" and it's like falling down the rabbit hole with Alice, they just keep going round in circles.

Permission and Security issues with Vista/Win7, check the following settings.
All users that are allowed to share need to have account on all the computers that they are allowed to connect to.
Everyone is an account, it means a group of all of the users that already have an account and been established as users.
Using the Everyone feature saves the need of configuring permission to each of the established users, it does not mean Everyone that feel that they would like to login.

Users that do not have an account on the computer are Not part of the Everyone Group.

If security on the LAN is Not needed and users are Not established, then switching On the Guest account provides semi-open configuration.
http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/Turn-the-guest-account-on-or-off
---------------------
Point to the a Folder that meant to to be share. Right click and choose properties.
In the properties
Click on the Security tab shown in the pic bellow to the right) and check that the users and their permission (shown in the pic bellow center and left) are correctly configured. Then do the same to the Permission tab.
This screen shot is from Win 7, Vista's menus are similar.

In both the Security panel, and the Permission panel you have to highlight each User/Group and examine that the Permission Controls are checked correctly.
When everything is OK, Reboot the Network (Router, and computer).
* Note . The Groups and Users shown in the screen-shoot are just an example. Your list will look the way your system is configured.

Jack thanks for the help. When I click on the security tab I just get the same permission denied message instead of the screen you show. Thanks for taking the time to write such a detailed reply.

Thanks for everyone for helping me with this. I finally made a new user on the home server that matched the user name on the pc and that allowed me access to all of the folders. But I still don't understand why only the docs folder was inaccessible before, it seems if the user names didn't match I shouldn't have been able to access any of the folders.
