Damn, this pisses me off! There's so many things I want/need, but I can't buy them all! Right now, this is my list:

-a new monitor
-a new computer
-a digital camera
-a new television
-home-theater system (speakers, DVD, the works!)
-a portable mp3-player.

The new computer is in my to-do list for 1st quarter next year (gonna get myself a Clawhammer). Will get a new monitor in the same time or earlier. The home-theater would be awesome thing to have, but I might just have to settle for a new widescreen-television (my old TV is at it's last legs). Digital camera would be a useful thing to have. So that leaves the mp3-player. I might just delay getting that. But having one would free me quite alot of HD-space (I would get one with a HD)... But no, I just have to say no to the mp3-player for now.

Why oh why do I have to love expensive hi-tech gadgets?!

Not really, I have all those things (mainly because of a Best Buy employee discount when I worked there last summer), but I'm BROKE and in debt to my parents now (from other misc. college living expenses)... but it's worth it! :D

Get a job at a retail store like Best Buy or something- excellent way to get the goods you want at insane discounts. I should also point out I couldn't afford it all if I had a halfway decent social life or girlfriend. If either of those comes along soon, I would probably sell 90% of my luxuries. How old are you?

EDIT: I should also REALLY point out that materialistic goods are NOT everything. I would GLADLY trade in everything I have for a good girlfriend, better grades, graduate school, etc etc. I just made the mistake of maturing as an audiophile about 20 years too early. :frown:

Well, I have a good job with good pay. But the privilige of living here (Helsinki) takes away large part of my income! I have a girlfriend (which might be part of the reason why I can't afford those gizmos. She wants me to spend my money on things like clothes and such. Sheesh!), but social-life is nothing to write home about. And I like it that way :p. How old am I? I'm turning 25 in august.

Ya, I know materialism is not everything. But it can make life a bit more bearable :D.

If I'm not happy with my life, where can I get a refund :p?

I'll give you a refund for the full purchase price, but you have to have your receipt.

think about it this way:

New monitor - unless you're using a 15" CRT or something really crappy, do you really need it?

New computer - Is IE too slow on your 1ghz athlon now? What the heck do you need a new one for?

Digital Camera - You're not getting a new monitor or PC, what the hell do you need to take pictures of?

Televesion - TV rots your brain.

Home Theatre system - How many times can you watch the same DVD over and over again, anyway?

Portable MP3 player - Do you really spend that much time walking around?

I have oldish 21" monitor with not-so-good image quality. I spend alot of my time using my computer, so good monitor is a must. Also I want 1600x1200, something my current monitor can't do at acceptable refresh-rate.

Actually, I have 800Mhz Duron. It is getting a bit slow in some apps (read: games). And I'm also planning to move to a source-based Linux-distro, which compiles everything I install from scratch, and that can take hours, depending on the CPU!. Faster CPU helps ALOT in that. Also, my HD is full.

Digital Camera - You're not getting a new monitor or PC, what the hell do you need to take pictures of?

Ummm, I wouldn't be using that camera to take pics of my computer. A camera is a good thing to have.

I like my brains rotten. Makes reality more bearable :p

Well, I have more than one DVD. Would have even more if I had a decent setup. Watching DVD's on a computer is not ideal

Portable MP3 player - Do you really spend that much time walking around?

Not really, but when I do, it would be nice to have access to my music. And like I said, mp3-player is last on my list right now.

haha, you need to do what 90% of Americans would do in your shoes - go into debt to fulfill all your wants and desires! Already in debt? Well, get into deeper debt!

Or, you could just re-arrange your priorities a little, such as not going to the doctor or dentist, then complaining because doctors are too expensive when you've got loads of frivolous personal luxuries at home, in your cars, etc.

Or, you could just start stealing stuff, a method of acquiring things that is becoming all-too popular with a younger generation who seems to believe they are entitled to anything they want at a price they agree with.

So...all is not lost.

A new monitor I understand if you have a bad one right now.

But you likely don't NEED those. You just want them. They are mostly luxury items.

heh, well, not really. If you put $25,000 into a solid state amplifier, it would sound just as good as a tube amp. As it is, self-proclaimed 'audiophiles' will not consider digital equipment in that price range because of the tube fad.

welcome to the club :)

I'd add my list of "stuff I want, but can't afford", but it'd take me too long to upload all that text...

I probably won't be buying anything during the next four years. University's expensive :(
