I don't get spending so much money on cars.

i drive around the apartment complex i live in and most houses have over $70k in vehicles in their driveway. $70,000.00 worth of car and they are renting.

i don't get it.

ok, another eg. driving down a local subdivision, 95k in vehicle in the driveway, ok, so they have an $800k house and 95k in car. hmm i can almost understand that.

then down in Georgia, i drive down a middle class neighborhood and the same $95k in vehicles in the driveway. their house is only worth $300k.

is it me or is that way out of whack.

i have two used vehicles (yes i did buy them new but the newer one is now 5 yrs old and the older one is almost 7 yrs old). so i have mb $8k in vehicle and i'm living in an apartment, of course at the end of the month, i close on a new house, 3200 sq ft and $465k in house.

mb i'm the stupid one for spending all my money on house instead of car.

btw, i haven't had a car payment for like 3 yrs now. ;)

Some people get it, some people don't. I'm one of the latter.
I suppose part of it is just showing off for some of them.

It's a shame but having a nice car in our society is a status symbol. A nice car usually means the person driving it has some money.

It's kinda silly though to be renting an apartment and to have purchased a $70k car. Maybe the people renting have money?

Ever had a ride in a 70k vehicle? Ever driven a 70k vehicle?

My guess is probably not or you'd understand. :)

I do admit that having a 70k vehicle while renting is kinda rediculous but you can't fault the 800k home owners. Unfortunetly most of them probably have a nice car for the badge.

There are some however, who do appreciate a fine automobile and I am one of them.

Plus, are you planning on taking the money you saved by driving a Hyundai to the grave when you die?

I don't understand it either... prolly has something to do with overemphasis on materialism in our society, blah blah blah, etc.

my mistake, i meant 70K in cars, as in 2 cars worth 70k. but some of the high end mercedes i'm seeing in this neighborhood probably did go for 70k.

actually, yes i have. i've driven quite a few very nice ones, but for me, driving is rarely a pleasure anymore, it's just a means for me to get from where i live to where i am working that day. i drive about 35k per year so, it's more of an occupation at this point than a joy ride thing.

i did all that kind of driving before i got married and had kids, that stuff doesn't give me the adrenaline rush it used to.

A lot of my life is behind the wheel, and driving (cruising around, or competitively) are one of my biggest hobbies... of course I'm going to have a pricey car :)

But then again - I also have a nice house... so... nevermind.

maybe they have a crazy, long commute. this is probably the only reason i could see myself buying an expensive vehicle for.

$70k seems pretty high though.

If your wealthy then $70k for a car is equal to $20k for somone with normal income, also many people lease expensive cars which costs much less and often allows them to write the payments off if their company picks up the tab.

If you live in your car (i.e. lots of commuting/traveling) I can understand wanting some comfort. What I don't get it is the status symbol or "I've got money" factor - who cares? Why would you want to advertise that you have money? For a society that's hell-bent on privacy and security we sure do want people to notice us.

It is just a luxury, one they're willing to sacrifice other things for. Many people around here buy computer components regular folk would balk at too remember :p As for myself, my most expensive vehicle was a Mazda 6 SportWagon, which is brilliant, but less than half of the $70K mentioned (and that was CDN funds too). Every other car I have owned, or will for a long time (wife drives it), are old beaters I'll drive into the ground. Just not a priority for me.

Because people are stupid when it comes to money.

Then they complain about never being able to get ahead, driving their 40K car on 80K salary.

Well I am really into cars and I don't buy a car just because I want someone to think I have money. I do it because to me its more than a vechile to get to and from places. I take pride in it and do things to it and enjoy it. Some people spend all their money cloths, trips, blah blah blah. Me mostly my truck.

Exactly. Last week I met up with one of my friends who recently bought a Bentley Conti GT. Talk about a nice car. :D
