I downloaded BeOS5 personal edition last night while I watched a movie, and I just installed it this morning... Surprisingly, it worked this time! w00t!

At first I was like "bleh, guess the modem doesn't work..", but I got it working somehow! I chose USRobotics X2 (X2 disabled) or some crap like that and I'm connected at 19200bps right now, but connected nonetheless! It doesn't seem *that* slow.. but heh, BeOS is pretty nice! This browser ain't bad for something some dude wrote :p ... but I still prefer IE5 over anything, any day :) ... Say, what browsers are available for BeOS, if any? :)

Oh, and if you have any tips at getting my modem working fully (example, 44-48kbps), please let me know :D

I got BeOS 5 personal edition the day it came out a while ago. I do have to admit it is very cool. I like how you can just double-click a exe and it goes into BeOS.

Didn't have any problems with my hardware except I NEED a boot disk to get my 3com ethernet card to work.

I deleted it though since I play games a lot which is something that can't be really done in BEOS yet...

There we go, got myself back up to 44kbps.. ahh :)

This browser is hideous, but it works... hopefully I'll get a better browser soon :D

I got GimICQ.. it's cool, only problem is, it only actually works when I open it, say 1 out of 10 tries... it gives me some error message... I keep trying and eventually I get in... rather annoying, but oh well ... nothing else has done that so far ('cept the other ICQ client I tried).

I like it though, ICQ in 300K :) ... sure beats the 6 meg windows version :)

Now the real question is, can I find a free ISP thingy that has their software available for BeOS... I doubt it :(

oh yeah and it's cool, my modem and mouse etc all work and I didn't have to touch a thing! Even windows was harder to set up :p

The only thing that I don't like is I haven't figured out how to get the sound working... whether it is the fact that their media player doesn't play mp3s or it doesn't recognize my audio hardware, I don't know.. but I have a regular old SB16 ISA card...

I'll try playing a music cd or something...

Woah, it works!! woohoo!!! Now I know there's hope for playing mp3s! hehe

hmm.. it seems to play my cd better than windows... this particular cd doesn't work properly in my cd rom, but it does in my cd player ... so far in BeOS there are no messups though... this is cool!

I can't wait til ..... damn, nevermind, the cd still messes up :( guess I got my hopes up too quick ... oh well, it's still cool that it works ;) ...

When I got BeOS 5 and some of the ICQ clones, most gave me erros like you said. I think it was because they were for 4.5 and not supported for 5 yet. But by now there should be plenty of version 5 programs. Even after a week after it's release I seen a version 5 Napster.

Yep I have Napster... It kicks ass. Alot of the programs in BeOS look a hell of alot nicer than in Win9x/2K in my opinion... I think the overall OS looks cool too, but that's just because I'm so used to the Windows platform. I bet if I had used nothing but BeOS for years and switched to Windows, it'd look cool too... :p

All that talk makes me want to do download it again and use it. But I probably won't because I play games too much and don't want to be bothered with restarting into win98 to play games then back to BeOS when I'm done to do whatever else.

It really is great though. Much easier to use than linux. It supposedly has excellent SMP support too.
