I don't feel so bad about my lowly GF DDR anymore :)

I went to a lan party this weekend with a buddy of mine who has a 1.7 GHz P4 and a GF2 Ultra. I myself have a Thunderbird 933 MHz and a GF DDR.

Anyhoo, we decided to compare our systems performance in Quake III, running in 640 by 480 all options off he gets 209 FPS and I get 163 FPS. In 1024/768 with all options turned on he gets 136 FPS and I get 98 FPS.

Anyway, at first I was a little upset, but then after about an hour playing 32 player Q3 over lan I realised I was owning everyone. I had met the fraglimit on the last four maps in a row while he was just doing average.

Then it occured to me that he had spent $2,500 on his system total, and for what? A measly 38 FPS and a losing Quake III score. I paid only 798 total for my system including a nice monitor, SB live and 256 Meg ram. So in the end the FPS weren't helping out at all. Yeah his system will last longer maybe, but my little GF DDR system ain't so bad! I kinda like my 98 FPS anyhow!

Yup. AMD proves you don't need to dish out the cash by the wheel barrow full anymore. It's a great chip, but VIA has its woes. I'm loving my P4, personally, and I wouldn't trade it for any AMD setup. It's damn nice. Just buy what's in your budget and be happy. A lot of people think they need the best and such, but really, you don't. I bought the P4 because I believe, despite the future socket change, it will last me longer without having to upgrade it. Also, I am enjoying my Intel chipset as it does not mind my SBLive Platinum and I have yet to get a system crash.

I'm planning to build an AMD box again when the nForce comes out. That should be quite interesting.

Good for you!

Well its nothing personal against Intel, I would feel the same if he had a 1.4 GHz Thunderbird. I guess I just lucked out with the entire Via crash/incompatibility bug because my SB Live works like a charm with no errors/bugs.
